Carols

Four years ago - almost to the day, I approached the organist after the Carols by Candlelight at the anglican church in Vevey to inquire about the possibility of having organ lessons.

Fast forward to yesterday, and it was me in the driving seat! With Rebecca pulling stops for me, and Dad (flown over with Mum for the weekend) got roped into the choir too.

The pressure definitely made me work my socks off, I've probably made more progress in the last two months than in the previous two years!

Organ ... Orgue

I haven't talked about the organ much here over the past year, so you could be forgiven for assuming I'd given up. But in fact it's quite the opposite, I practice one or two times a week, and play at least once a month in one or other of the local English-speaking churches. I'm not making as much progress as I'd like (have to keep learning new pieces so I'm not always playing the same thing, but that leaves less time for polish).

Some time I'd like to do a nice video to post here.

Last Friday I experimented with bringing the girls with me while I was practising. It wasn't a 100% success. They had a great time, but I didn't get much practice time in!

St John's

New church, new organ last Sunday. Rebecca came with me and took the photos. She agreed to come with me as long as she could where her princess dress: "So that people will look at me and say I'm beautiful" (!).

Musical week ... Semaine musicale

This last week leading up to Christmas is rather full of rehearsals - for me! I'm playing the piano at church on Sunday, and singing in a 'flash' men's choir (formed just for this occasion), and of course playing the organ on Christmas day.

All fun.

Especially the organ and the choir. I must admit that choruses seem a bit insipid compared to whomping out a good old hymn on the organ.

Going to Blighty ...

Part of the 'plan' was to go and try out the organ in the village church. It was a very pleasant and very old organ, with 'real' wooden stops.

Unfortunately, I didn't get very far in to my recital, as these chaps were driving this cherry-picker up towards the altar to go and fix some security cameras to the walls. Very interesting to watch though.

Swiss Organ Museum ...

The Swiss Organ Museum is only a short drive from our place. A few weeks ago, I went there with the girls, and we had a personalised guided tour from the rather ancient 'father' of the museum. He was very kind, and interesting: he managed to keep the girls' attention for an hour and a half.

This organ has all-wood pipes, and was built by an organ builder in his spare time (just for a change!).

This harmonium has a strange numbered keyboard: it has pre-set chords which were allowed anyone to play the hymns on a Sunday morning.

The girls hopped up on the bench either side of him while he demonstrated the organ that used to belong to the regional radio broadcaster.

(PS: Perhaps fittingly he is also the titular organist of the oldest organ in the world!).

First gig ...

I've been asked to fill in for an organist at the Anglican church in Lausanne, at the beginning of November.

It's a slightly different league to the one I've been used to practicing on, but at least this time I have a key and can practice when I want.

The first service will be 'without pedals'...

At last ... Enfin

It's been a while since I posted any organing here, maybe this first video will show you why. When I was playing it sounded alright, but listening afterwards, it sounds more like a funeral dirge. It's also the day I forgot my organ shoes. I did another version with the big 16" pipes, but my camera can't 'hear' that low...

Concerto in G nach G.P Telemann (Bach BWV985)
Without the feet, things sounds a bit better.

Still practising ...

I haven't posted any of my organ ditties recently, but it's not because I've stopped practising. It's just that I've started adding in the pedals, and so far, it's not sounding particularly presentable.

It's funny to observe Kalia, who is currently learning to play the piano with both hands: when I see her brain steaming, 'stuck' on the next two notes, I really know how she's feeling. It's the same thing for me with both hands and both feet.

But when it does work, it sounds great.

Here's the second piece I tried the other day, 5th take, still with a few bugs in. You can't see my hands in this one because it uses both manuals (keyboards) and the pipes are in different places: so if the camera is next to me you'd only hear the left hand, not the right.

I really like this piece, even though the title isn't particularly joyful. It took me several months to learn the left hand by heart (it's only 20 years since the last time I tried to learn a piece by heart!)

I forgot to say (I think), that during the summer, one of the bigger (metal) pipes of the organ fell down and almost nobbled someone. Very rare for that to happen, apparently. It's fixed now, anyway.

Maybe someday I'll manage to play it a bit faster!

John Stanley, Voluntary II, Slow

At long last got round to going and doing some practice on the organ - first time in ages, though I did have a lesson (with the new teacher) near the start of September, I haven't been back on my own since June (or was it May?!).

I recorded this and another piece. The other piece took 5 takes: which my computer is currently choking on, so you'll have to do with this shorter one for the mo.

Why the organ? ... Pourquoi l'orgue?

Talking with the guys a few weeks back, I mentioned that the piano was sometimes difficult for motivation because it's a solo instrument. Daniel pointed out that the organ was probably worse. Which is true.

Which begs the question: Why the organ?

I've thought of a few reasons - some more rational than others.

One very good reason is that - as my organ tutor put it (paraphrased): you don't have to play very complicated stuff for it to sound awesome. My problem with the piano was that my listening level was always going to be way beyond anything I could play.

Another reason is that a good bit of Bach on an organ in a big church building moves me far more than any number of "Jesus is my girlfriend"* choruses you tend to here on any given Sunday morning

Slightly less rational is the link with history. This king of instruments which has existed for centuries, and is sort of almost alive - in the sense that it's made of very basic stuff like wood, metal, leather. Good technology for a luddite.

There's also the link with my history. One grandfather played the organ, the other was a vicar. What you looking at? So I'm 40 and I'm starting to look in the rear-view mirror. It's normal...

*Sorry, couldn't resist the swipe.

Cameron Carpenter

If you shut your eyes, you can’t see the sequins, but you can’t see his pedal-work either. The guy’s a nutter, but I do wonder whether in this day and age, any organ renaissance might not have to include this kind of showman.

See here too. Oh, and here, if you want to know what some of the furore is about.

Not great ... Mediocre

Not immensely proud of this - lots of borked notes, but I figured I ought to have at least one thing to show for every practice session.

For the curious, the new shoes are easier to play with, but I'm still a long way off playing anything decent. I seem to have a balance problem, I have to hold on: otherwise the weight of my legs makes me fall forwards.

This is more John Stanley - Variation I, Andante. Note changing between manuals for different sounds.

Shoes ... Chaussures

Finally got my organ shoes, not bad eh?

I'm looking forward to trying them out. They're considerably narrower than my normal shoes (see below), so I'm hoping I'll spend less time hitting two notes at once.

However, even though they weren't expensive, they cost me a lot!

Price: 60.0
Post: 50.0
VAT: 8.0
Administrative costs: 20.0

Yes, the Swiss state has outsourced VAT on postal deliveries to the swiss Post office, who make us pay for the 'privilege' of having them charge us VAT. So I'm paying more for having paid VAT than what I pay in VAT, and I'm paying more to receive the shoes than I am to buy them!

(Of course, you don't have to wear shoes to play the organ, but playing bare foot is frowned upon, apparently!).
