Kiss ... bisous

Ok so I lied, I'm already back on the computer. But the intention is to catch up on the backlog of unanswered mails, before turning it off for a (slightly) prolonged period.

And just for fun here's a photo of Kalia trying out a new use of the mirror in the hall.

And here's a link to an interesting little 'toy': http://www.viksoe.dk/code/gmail.htm.

C

We got our 'C' residence permits yesterday from the 'resident control office'.

This changes quite a lot of things, though I don't know all the details:
- No longer taxed at source (though I prefer it)
- I can start claiming all sorts of tax deductions (travel expenses to work etc.)
- We can vote in the local elections (I think)
- We can leave the country for more than 3 months without having to start over with all the residence permits if we come back.

That aside, I've got two more days of work and then I'm off for two weeks - to rest my exhausted brain, and Madame will rest her back, which is in bad shape since yesterday. We're going to be staying at home but attempting the double challenge of not answering the phone and not turning the computer on!

Now I'm off to find out all the other differences...

Starting over ...

A while ago I said there was some big news coming up. Then I forgot to tell you - it was that my friend and colleague Nico (or nde, for those in the know) left the company.

Since then, there has been another bit of news, which is that I've left too!

As of Monday, I work for Matisa, and I have a little badge to clock in and out each day - which may seem completely irrelevant, but to me it is very important, having previously had all my overtime disappear into a black hole.

It's also a return towards my original profession (mechanical engineer) - though still at a safe distance, as I'm still programming, but not it's technical programming, not web sites!

They make the machines that put railway lines straight, and I'm currently learning all about 'bourreuses' (haven't learnt the english equivalent yet), and lots of other interesting stuff (line, level and cant...)

I'm hoping that this will be a big change to improve our lives (as a family) - as I won't have the stress of working in a service-oriented company, less working ours (back down to 8 hours a day), and a more peaceful working environment.

(I just have to go and buy my steel-capped boots!).

Saturday ... Samedi

Lots of things this weekend.

We learnt that the red spots all over Kalia were probably just infantile rubella, and not the chicken pox we feared.

I spent the morning at La Passerelle, with some other guys levelling off a part of the garden and digging holes to put the swings feet in. We finished off with a barbeque at lunch time, and then I headed off to look after Kalia, while Madame sneaked off to prepare...

A surprise birthday party (yes, my birthday was a month ago, so that was the surprise), with lots of different friends invited. It was a nice time, though I wasn't able to spend as much time with everyone as I would have liked.
