10 years ... 10 ans

10 years ago today, Kalia was born, and shortly before that this blog (which now has 1641 posts - an average of one every two days).

Typically on these occasions one says "it seems like just yesterday!".

Having mulled things over I'd say that no, it seems like 10 years ago.

As she likes to remind us: "I'm not a baby any more!"

Another photo ...

Not much time to say more, so here is a photo of little My. She really is that sweet, honest! Very sociable, friendly, happy-natured. We're very greatful and pleased. She keeps discovering new and interesting things. This evening she spent a good while putting things in a box, emptying it, putting them back etc (like Eeyor).

She's into checking out her physical limits as well. Climbing on furniture, crawling under the bed, testing her balance, and her parents lightning reactions at times!

A bit busy this evening, sorry. So here's a photo to keep you happy.

Nectarine & Ketchup

Quoi ? Y'a pire...

Amongst the 'standard' set of questions that one asks expectant parents, there is the classic - "have you thought of a name yet?". Apparently this can be a cause of marital strife for some. I have to say that for us, that hasn't been the case (we don't argue about interior decoration either; we do argue about directions on car journeys). I hope it isn't too shocking to reveal that in fact, we had the baby names worked out before we even got married.

(Getting the baby 'worked out' has been slightly more difficult)

But now that the big day approaches, I have permission to share one juicy detail with you. Which is that our chosen names are Nectarine (if it's a girl) and Ketchup (if it's a boy).

Crazy! I hear you cry. Well check this out... and come back in two weeks to see if I'm serious.

Early warning ... préavis

The list of people who want to be informed as soon as 'we' go into labour is growing steadily, though how either of us are supposed to have the presence of mind for that is beyond me. For the rest of you, I propose checking out this blog on a half-hourly basis for the next 3 weeks, as I will obviously make sure to update my blog from the hospital.

Last night, a kindly friend thought it would be a good idea to explain all the grisly details of an episiotomy. A great idea just before bedtime, and you can imagine what kind of night my wife had. All of a sudden, a cesarian seemed like a good idea! But it's difficult to decide how one would like to be carved up.

The problem with having no previous experience, is that we're terribly vulnerable to the stories that others tell. And obviously, it's the ones with the worst stories who are most eager to share them.

Anyway, today Madame phoned a friend, who has experience both an episiotomy and a cesarian (though not at the same time!), who advised that it's best to stick with a 'natural' birth, unless there are medical reasons for a cesarian.

For those who are wondering: yes, here in Switzerland you can ask for a cesarian if you want, even if there is no 'reason'. Switzerland has one of the best medical services in the world, but it doesn't come cheap (The linked page shows monthly health insurance costs, in CHF)

We're pretty much ready to 'roll' now. Baby's room is ready, hospital suitcase is packed and waiting in the hall, Madame is putting the finished touches to the visitors room/office as I write. But the other night when she woke with a sore tummy and I thought this might be 'it', I panicked a bit - "I'm not ready!".

They say that you never are. When the big day comes, it's not just a baby being born, but also a mother and father.

One last thing that needs sorting out is the digital camera - an essential accessory as I'm sure you are aware. I'm looking to spend about 300 CHF, so if anyone has any advice - or offers - let me know.

While you weren't sleeping ... Insomnies

For the last couple of nights, Madame has been sleeping on the sofa. Being 8 months pregnant involves lots of tossing and turning and multiple trips to the loo. And sleeping in the same bed as someone who is 8 months can involve... not sleeping much! So, because she is a pearl, she volunteered to sleep on the sofa (it's closer to the bathroom).

Last night I asked if she wanted to try sleeping in a proper bed again. But she preferred that I try sleeping on the sofa with her; that way if there was a problem it was me that would have to get up again and not her.

Predictably, we both ended up sleeping the whole night on the sofa!

Avis contraire...Trilingual?

With reference to the slightly-ambiguous title of this blog, I should probably point out that it is the blog which is bilingual, and not the baby. It's difficult to ascertain linguistic abilities in-utero, but the intention is obviously that baby should learn all three languages. My wife would like me to add Italian into this blog, but I'm not too keen on losing my alliteration!

(By the way, if you are frustrated at not understanding the French bit, try this, and have a laugh at the English bit too!)

Scan...Nez vers le haut

If you can make anything of this, it's 'junior' about a month ago. It's a picture of the head, nose pointing up. If you want more click here.
