Swiss vapeur parc

This summer when we went to Swiss Vapeur Parc, Blogger didn't provide the video function.

But now it does, so here's a lovely video of Kalia - a nice example of carefree childhood - making the most of the here and now, and not worrying what other people might think!

Plan B

Had the workmen in last week, replacing our 80 year old 'double glazing' (actually double windows) with the real thing.

Had a chuckle on Thursday evening when I got back and saw this. It appears that they'd hacked the bathroom window out, only to discover that the new window didn't fit.

They rapidly cobbled the old window back in place (screws straight into the frame, silicon and expanding foam etc.).

Nice to know that it doesn't just happen to programmers.

Of course, the difference with a software 'hack' is that the end user never knows!

Look back ... souvenirs

Round about 17 years ago, an 18 year-old british lad sailed across the Channel to spend a year at 'La Maison Blanche' in Brittany...

It was a 'gap' year between end of A-levels and uni. Quite common at that time, but probably a bit less so now that there is student debt and all that stuff. But it is the ideal time to do 'once in a lifetime' stuff - when you've got no mortgage to pay, no job, no responsibility, and your brain is still malleable!

I did a year of voluntary work - the first time I discovered that any kind of work could be enjoyable (that never happened at school!). All kinds of stuff - painting, mowing the grass in the massive garden, gardening, driving the tractor, feeding the chickens, cooking, washing up, looking after kids. I met lots of people with who I'm still in touch with today.

The couple who ran this place (which was a cross between conference center, church, kibbutz, place for socially-disadvantaged persons etc.) spoke very good English, but only ever talked to me in French. For which I'm very grateful.

That one year completely changed the course of my existence. Without it I wouldn't now be living and working in Switzerland, married to my wife (we communicate in French), with a beautiful daughter who we hope will be trilingual.

(However, my English would probably better...)

Answer ...Réponse

No guesses, so far, as to what my mystery photos were.. so here's the answer.

We were at a wedding last weekend, and this was the car. 1930's Rolls, smelling of hot oil, and can't imagine how many gallons to the mile, but a nice piece of history if nothing else.

//I realise that I don't often 'back link' to previous posts - which doesn't make it easy for newcomers to connect with the history of this blog. I'll try and do it more often, it just unfortunately implies me making more effort to remember and search for the references.

Guess ... devinnette

A little bit of fun, see if you can guess what this is.

I think the last photo is a bit too much of a giveaway...

Grant Serpell

Aka "Sir" (generic name for all male teachers in the UK).

He is not dead (as far as I know), so this is not an obituary, just a passing homage. Dunno what made me think of him this weekend.

He was my chemistry teacher at school, he is better known for being member of a (now revived) 70s pop group which had some success in Holland/Denmark (I think). But to me he is (was?) the world's best chemistry teacher. He would have to be, for me to get an "A" at A-level!

This guy could make chemistry interesting - which pretty much qualifies him for genius-teacher status. If I remember correctly, they used to send along teaching students to sit at the back of the class to see 'how to do it'.

I posted a while back about how much I hated school. Mr Serpell's classroom was an exception. This is the only class where I could sit with my feet up, notes on my knees, without being taken to task for insolence (or whatever). As long as my brain was switched on, that was OK.

And he's a pro for detecting and switching on sleeping brains. He would switch from mind-numbing organic chemistry to an anecdote or joke, just enough to get everyone hooked up again, and then shoot us up with a bit more of that chemistry stuff.

He was nice, he treated us like people, not the kind of teacher that you couldn't possibly imagine outside of a classroom.

He lent me old Oscar Peterson albums (this was in the days when you didn't get taken to court for copying out-of-print music), he played the drums.

Though I didn't think about it at the time, I guess one of the most amazing things about him was that he managed to change from pop 'star' to 'anonymous' teacher, and do it successfully and with good grace.

Google Reader

http://reader.google.com
http://www.google.com/intl/fr/googlereader/tour.html

A little plug for Google Reader, not because I get any money out of it, but it's a handy tool.

The problem that I have is following a multitude of blogs, without having to visit each one every day to find out if anything has been added.

You may have head of 'RSS' - avoiding sticky and boring detail, it's basically a technique that allows a site to 'publish' it's content in a standard format which can be read by programs.

A 'feed aggregator' is a program that allows you to put together these 'feeds' from all the sites that you are interested in (it doesn't have to be just blogs), and keep up to date and read them from one place.

Google Reader is special in that it's a web site that will do this for you - so you don't have to download and install anything on your computer. All you need is a google mail login (or you can sign up to get one), and then use that to set up Google Reader. Then, anytime you come across a site which has a feed, you can add it to your reader.

You can identify sites with an RSS feed, there is an orange icon in the address bar (which you should be able to see on this site) - to the right of where the address of the site is (http://benjol.blogspot.com).

Here is the follow up with the French air display team. What impressed about their show was the way they changed formation while looping the loop - vertically.

I didn't much care for the voice of their lady commentator though...

Patrouille Suisse

This is the Swiss equivalent of the Red Arrows. There are only 6 planes though.

I was intending to do a 'compare and contrast' with the French one, but I've got too many videos to upload of both.

I love the yodelling as an introduction...

Den ... Cabane

Cool.

Today it was 'Federal fasting day' - which meant bank holiday for me.

I did fast for two meals, as it happens. Unfortunately it was because of the previous two days excesses...

This morning we built a 'den' on the balcony. I'm 'old' now, but still young enough to remember the feeling of sitting in a den, 'safe and sound'. Probably something to do with like being in a mother's womb.

Anyway, we made ours pretty snug and cosy. We read some books, pretended to sleep, and Mamma brought us chocolate and water (with straws!) on a tray.

Those of you who know me well will of course realise that this was an educational experience, and that I am devoting myself to my daughters intellectual development. I wouldn't want anyone to believe I might actually have been enjoying myself!

//One cool and totally unrelated thing - this site shows the photos being uploaded in real time (i.e. right now) to 'blogger' blogs.

Way back when ... fort fort longtemps

Just under 25 years ago...

If I have a soft spot for little girls, it's all thanks to my dear little sis.

Paint.Net

Just a little plug for Paint.Net. It's a free equivalent of Photoshop. I followed a tutorial to cobble together is old-style photo of La Tour-de-Peilz.

Interlude

A little break to avoid losing all my non-airplane-friendly readers.

A few photos of Kalia. She likes ice-lollies. And helicopters.

Funnies ...

First up, and electric glider - with retractable propeller. Quite impressive - it can take off and fly up to altitude with the propeller. Then at a switch of a button the properller is stowed and you get a normal-looking glider.

Back down on the ground, it can taxi off to the parking lot.

Below, REVA - an acrobatic team with 'backwards' planes.

Autumn is a cummin in ... coup de froid

It suddenly went all cold this week.

Forgot to mention yesterday that the Spitfire was one of the last 'marks', and had an interesting feature: double counter-rotating propellers. You can just about make them out on this video.

Bonus below - a Super Constellation (De Havilland, I think, can't be bothered to look it up. Well, actually I'm supposed to be being productive right now..)

We see it from time to time here, because it lives in Switzerland.

Funny thing is that Bex is a tiny little grass airfield. So all these big planes have to take off from elsewhere.

That thing you do ... Ca me fait

(If you're not interested in planes, I suggest you come back later).

Supermarine Spitfire PR XIX
Seriously, you really should avert your gaze, otherwise you'll end up thinking I'm a crackpot!

Apparently, the tradition for airshows at Bex is that the opening plane should be a Spitfire.

The noise of this plane makes me go all funny. To be honest, I could have cried.

Is it because the Spitfire is part of the English collective psyche? Is it because it reminds me of the last time I saw one at Duxford? Or is it just because the throbbing of that Rolls Royce Merlin wobbles me innards and warms the cockles of my heart?

(This is my first try at uploading film. I suspect you won't be able to see a thing, but hope you'll get the sound at least!)

Christian Moullec et ses Oies Sauvages
aka Flights with geese.

On a completely different note, this French guy flies geese to Scandinavia with his ultralight (which are banned in Switzerland, rather bizarrely), to try and get them into migrating again. It works apparently.

(The video for this one is below)

If this works, I'll probably be uploading more stuff soon - but if you want a real top class video, go here and wait till november!

Big girl ... Grande fille

Recently Kalia has got used to having 'things' in her hair (not in this photo) - she no longer rips them out as soon as you've got her all prettied-up. It really does make her look like a little girl and not a big baby.

In this photo she'd pinched someone's glasses - it also makes her look very grown up.

This Thursday, she's going to start going to 'school' - well, not really school. There's an English mum down the road with a three-year-old daughter who wants to start a sort of 'English creche'. It'll be just one morning a week, but we really hope that it will work out, and that Kalia will realise that English is not just a funny language spoken by her father!

Saturday I spent my day at Bex07, and had a whale of a time. I'll post more about that later, once I've sorted through the 500Mb of photos and film that I took!
