On poursuit donc nos expériences...

Sorry, not been much blogging going on in the last few days. We've been trying to catch up on sleep, and also chilling out with friends. We watched two films this weekend - the Saint and Johnny English. Enjoyed both of them, and having a good laugh did us lots of good.

The sleep wars go on. We still don't really understand what's going on with Kalia's sleep (or non-sleep) patterns. Sometimes she goes to sleep in her cot all on her own, sometimes she needs rocking, and sometimes she just screams and screams.

She fights to stay awake in her cot - I fight to stay awake at work!

The fact that she doesn't always cry makes it even more difficult to know what's happening, makes you think that there must be some reason when she does cry. In the late evening and in the middle of the night it's generally ok, so we figure it might be to do with daylight (if 5 oclock in the morning can be considered daylight). But even with the shutters closed it doesn't seem to make much difference.

So, we keep on experimenting...

Down ... baisse

Some worries today about Kalia who has lost as much weight over the last week as she would usually put on. Not too sure whether it's because Mamma has been under the weather, or because Kalia has done more crying than usual (as we're trying to get her used to sleeping in her cot).

We'll see if things go back to normal this coming week.

This evening I went out for a walk with her in the baby carrier (as the weather forecast says rain for the next four days). For the second half of the walk she was wide awake and looked all around with her big black eyes. She's so cute!

In case you wondered, yes I did stuff some extra padding under the shoulders for this photo - just to give it that american footballer look.

(I thought the caption on the second photo in this article was a real howler)

Here's a photo showing the pushchair that did Madame's back in.

Last night was a hard one. We think that it's the painkillers that cut the milk output, so Kalia kept waking up hungry all night. We didn't sleep much (but I did get a bit of work done between 4 and 5!)

Here is a little file that I worked on last night to help me decide how far out of my way to go for cheaper petrol.

Pope ... Pape

Pope fatigue. I guess one should be grateful they managed to decide so quickly, otherwise we'd have been watching, hearing and reading black smoke for days on end. Though I guess those UK residents among you are up for lots of smoke and hot air anyway in the coming weeks (elections).

The real news of the day is that Kalia went to sleep all on her own at 2 this morning - that is, no dummy, nothing - I put her in her cot, she played a bit, and then went to sleep. This is profoundly cool. Apart from having her feeds a bit more closely together than previously (something which will hopefully iron out shortly), things are going amazingly well.

Mamma went to the osteopath today, who made her back go 'crack' and now it still hurts. I'm afraid that I'm still unsure about just where osteopaths sit between doctor and quack, so I'm waiting to see what happens next.

(For some reason, can't upload any pictures this evening)

Impossible

Dunno if any of you are going to be up to working this one out, though I can't say I've had any answers for the previous ones!

Things a hotting up here. Kalia ended up sleeping (as opposed to wailing) in her cot from about midnight to 6 in the morning - with pit stop in the middle - which isn't bad for a first attempt. But the dramatic news of the day is that Madame has done her back in, and the doctor says she shouldn't pick up Kalia for 10 days.

... which is a long time in politics, and babyhood too. This put the cat among the pigeons of our well-oiled weekly routine. Fortunately several friends in the church have agreed to muck in, and this week is just about sorted out now.

One bit of good news: Kalia fell asleep in her cot this evening without so much as a whimper.

PS. I'd love to know who the mystery surfer from Hong Kong is.

Big snow ...

"There's snow business like show business". I've never seen so much snow in one go in my whole life - more than 12 hours non stop (though I have to admit I didn't get up in the night to check).

Driving back home in the snow from Geneva was quite an experience. If you want to get some idea, first have a 5-hour night, then put your screen saver on 'Starfield simulation', turn of the lights, keep your head about a foot from the monitor, and stay like that for an hour. In the end you get kind of hypnotised by the snow and you don't even see the road anymore.

Sorry for those of you who have come here in the last few days and found nothing - it has been a combination of lots of things happening - invites etc., and us starting the 'now I'm a big girl and I ought to start sleeping on my own in my cot' stage with Kalia. (It's taken me long 2 hours, but now she's asleep - at last!)

We were invited out several times this weekend, and got to see lots of my readers 'in the flesh' - and ex-colleagues (of which I have quite a lot, but that's another story...) Fun, but tiring - this afternoon, we slept from
2 till 5!

Rats, she's already woken up again...

British Baby

I already wrote this post once, but it disappeared into a technical black hole. I find that it's a bit difficult to reproduce something that one has just written. After putting an idea 'on paper', I do a mental 'delete'... and the mental 'undelete' is a bit painful.

I guess you can work it out from the photo - we got the English (sorry, British) passport for Kalia today, which in turn meant we could go and pick up the swiss residence permit. Thus Kalia now exists in the eyes of the law.

I think we'll wait a while before launching into 'Operation Spaghetti or the quest for an Italian passport'...

Yesterday and today, Kalia has been doing nothing but eating and sleeping. Record hour-long feeding sessions! They say that there are growth spurts at 3, 6, 9 and 12 weeks - so maybe that's what it is.

Late, tired ....

Look no hands! ...

Here's a photo of Kalia concentrating very hard on sitting up 'all on her own'. It's a shame it's not a video, because even though she does manage to stay upright more or less on her own, her little head wobbles all over the place and it's quite funny!

Yesterday we had lots of friends round in the afternoon and evening. It was great fun, but I'm afraid the 'real' friends took priority of the the 'virtual' ones. Sorry!

This evening, finishing the last article for the church paper...

Sleep ... dodo

Today it snowed here in Swissland - not down here where we are, but further up on the 'plateau' which we drove through on our way to Bienne. We spent the day at a conference on mariage guidance (for ourselves, and maybe later for others). So Kalia had two long journies in the car, and she was very good all day and spent most of it sleeping. This evening and night are likely to be entertaining...

It was very interesting, and we came away with lots of things to think about, and some internal reorganisation to do. I hope it will help us to 'grow up' as a couple, and maybe go on to help others some day. Getting married is easier than staying married!

My quote for the day:
"The apostle Paul tells wives to respect their husbands. Ladies, your husbands need more respect than they deserve."

"... and he tells men to love their wives. Men, your wives need more love than they deserve!"

"It is a women's respect for her husband that helps to build him up. And it's a man's love for his wife that helps to build her up."

(Not too satisfied with the translation of that last sentence, hope it's understandable)

Tuscany ... Toscane

Here's another mystery photo - not the hardest, I'm saving that up for next week. Maybe next weekend I'll post all the answers.

I anyone knows of a good place to stay in Tuscany in July, with room for 4 adults, 4 children and a baby, self catering, not too expensive, and with a garden, please let us know! I've already found this site on Google, but it's always better to have something recommended by someone who's already been.

Principles ... Principes

As this photograph shows, I am of the opinion that one should start transmitting one's values to the next generation from a very early age!

But seriously, I think that the most important thing to teach is the 'golden rule' - "Do as you would be done by". The realisation that I am only the centre of my universe - and that everyone else has their own centre, seems to me to be the basis for respect.

Time out ... plus le temps

A demain !

I've finished two articles for the church 'paper' this evening, and have exhausted all my writing energy. See you tomorrow!

Ouch that hurts ...

Kalia is now two months old, and here in Switzerland that's the age at which you have your first jab. According to her Mamma, she was very brave ("more than her Daddy, in any case"), but she did have a little scream.

Yesterday our friendly mid-wife (health visitor) came and we chatted about how to work on Kalia's 'sleep independence'. She also said what a wonderful little treasure we have. It's true that Kalia is very alert for her age, and sociable. I love it when she lies then and looks me straight in the eyes and explains tons of things to me in goos and gaas. She's doing very well, and we're very pleased.

(Just in case you wondered, this photo comes from another day, we didn't take the camera with us to the doctor's! It's the photo which came after this one)

  • Quand on lui crie dessus
  • Passer des heures au téléphone

Out of time and ideas, here's a list of things that Madame/Mamma doesn't like:
  • When the food is not nicely presented on the plate
  • When the flat is all untidy
  • When her handbag is full of rubbish
  • When you (I) mix the yoghourt with the fruit at the bottom of the pot
  • Being shouted at (not me)
  • Phone calls that go on for hours

Easy ... facile

Following on from the previous competition, here is another fairly easy 'mystery' photo. Get ready though, I've got another one up my sleeve which I reckon will be impossible to crack.

By the way, did you know that if you want to comment on any of my posts here, you can click on the little blue 'comments' link at the bottom, and then on the 'post a comment' link. Your comments wil be added to the comments page for all the world to see. But if you change your mind, you can always ask me to remove it!

Photographic eyes ... Art dans l'oeil

Quelle belle photo !

Beautiful photo! I must say I'm quite pleased with this one - especially the mix of colours (plain luck, I didn't plan that bit). But actually, the beauty is already there, the photographer just records it.

(The real artist is to be sought elsewhere.)

The art of the photographer is to see. I find that my seeing 'inspiration' tends to come and go. There are low seasons when I go out all motivated and come back empty handied because I couldn't see any decent photos. But just having a new camera opens my eyes, and I discover gems that were there all along.

I think there must be a moral to that...

For those who wondered, here's photographic proof!

This Thursday, Kalia was 8 weeks old, and she's growing up into a 'big' girl - she now cries tears, she can pull herself up to sit up by holding onto our fingers, and she's always looking all over the place to see where she is and what's happening.

I'm slowly realising that being a Daddy of a little baby isn't so much fun when you have to go to work all day. It's a good thing that we have the weekend to get to know each other again!

//On a completely different tangent, try reading these two links (1 & 2, in that order) to see why I'm a computer programmer but also a luddite.
