Thrift ... Econome

Je me préparais à jeter ce petit truc à la poubelle, quand tout à coup j'ai pensé à ma grandmère qui, certainement, l'aurait mis de côté dans un tiroir avec tout plein d'autres objets "au cas où".

Ca m'énerve quand les gens aujourd'hui disent que c'était "mieux avant". La génération des mes grandparents ont trimé comme des malades, et conservé les choses par simple nécessité.

Pendant la guerre ma grandmère a déménagé plusieurs fois (pour suivre mon grandpère dans ses postes militaires). Rien d'étonnant en soi, sauf qu'elle a déménagé en train, avec un enfant. Réfléchissez un peu - combien peu d'affaires il faut avoir pour pouvoir déménager en train. Regarder autour de vous maintenant: si vous deviez déménager en train, vous embarqueriez quoi?!

OK, c'était temps de guerre. Jeune famille qui n'avait pas eu le temps de s'installer et accumuler des choses. M'enfin, c'était des gens qui connaissaient "la valeur des choses". Pas comme des jeunes qui peuvent excorier les "politiciens qui détruisent notre planète", tout en consommant et dépensant à tour de bras.

Voilà, enfin, dans le temps on appelait pas ça être écolo ou recycleur, on appelait ça être économe.

I was about to throw this in the bin when I thought of my grandmother, who would most likely have put it in a safe place for later, just in case.

It annoys me when people say that in the old days "things were better". My grandparents' generation scrimped and saved like crazy just to get by, from pure necessity.

During the war, my grandmother moved several times (to follow my grandfather on his military assignments). Nothing amazing, except that she moved by train, with a baby. Think about that a bit - how little one must own to be able to move by train. Look around your house: if you had to move by train, what would you take?!

OK, it was wartime, exceptional circumstances, a young couple who hadn't had time to accumulate lots of junk. Even so, people knew what things were worth in those days. Not like people now, who can decry politicians "destroying the planet", whilst spending a consuming with gay abandon.

Anyway, in those days, it wasn't called being ecological or recycling, it was simple thrift.
