Latest feat ... Dernier exploit

Sorry that I didn't hang around to take a photo, but this evening, I went to see what was going on in the dining room, as things seemed a bit quiet. There I found Little My on the dining table, having artfully manoeuvred a chair so that she could climb up there. There she was, sitting calmly playing with scissors and sticky-tape.

Walking is old hat now, she started running (of sorts), and especially climbing! I'm pretty proud of myself for having taught her to get down off things feet first. But this time I figured that it wasn't a good time to see if she was going to come down head first!

And she's talking more and more, with lots of expression, and even giving you time to answer. But still nothing we can understand.

Parallel universe

As you can see from the size of Kalia on this photo, I had this idea quite a long time ago. I had completely forgotten until this evening when I was trying to sort out my backlog of photos.

It could have happened I guess, but I wouldn't have had the time nor energy to write this blog and let you know about it.

Balcony ... Balcon

autoscout24
comparis
tcs
reliability index (in English)
et ...
mobility.

Here's a photo of Little My on the balcony - I like this photo 'cos there's lots of colour. You can also see some of my handiwork - the artificial carpet/grass (with integrated drainage!), and if you look a bit closer, the fine mesh grill which I've put behind the bars to prevent Kalia throwing her toys (or herself) on to the heads of our neighbours below...

If you're wondering where we're at on the car front, here are a few of the sites that I've been spending a lot of time on this week:
autoscout24 (sorry, not in English)
comparis (not in English either, but scroll down to the table: the title is "percentage of original price after two years")
tcs (the graph shows the fixed/variable costs of running a car)
reliability index (in English, a cool site, but I have doubts about some of the figures)
and
mobility (in English).

Lots of stuff to think about. If you have any thoughts about how to calculate (and handle) the cost of running a car, please comment below!

Car hate 3 ... Haine d'auto 3

It's the last straw.

Wednesday the handbrake stopped working. I figured it was the cable, so did the mechanic - said it would cost around 200F.

But it wasn't so simple - some bit of the rear brake mecanism had broken/fallen off and naffed up all the rest, drum etc. So it's 600-700F - given that you have to do both sides.

It would be almost bearable if it weren't for the fact that the alternator (or something to do with the alternator) started making funny but difficult to trace noises last week. So even if we fixed the brakes we still wouldn't be out of the woods.

So it's sniff and goodbye, with no small regrets (especially for the 2500F spent last year). But you have to stop somewhere. So now it's looking for another car time.

I hate cars, and I hate needing them!

Shirt ... Chemise

My clothes look better on her!

Cat!

Kalia loves cats so much that 'cat' is pretty much the only word that she always uses in the appropriate context (well, for anything with fur and 4 legs).

Helping Mamma ... J'aide Mamma

Here is missy helping her Mamma to put the shopping away. Well, actually Mamma had already put it away, but hey?.

She's sooooo cute. We were coming back in the car last night, and having woken up, she must have spent at least 45 minutes just looking out the window, with not even a peep.

New hat

Here is a photo of Little My with her snazzy new hat.

Welcome to Dodoma - this morning there are a few clouds and maybe even a few drops of rain. It will not get too hot today - max 30 degrees C in the afternoon!

We hope that you have survived the overnight flight from Heathrow, and that there was someone to meet you at the airport. All the best for the internal flight to Dodoma, and look forward to more news soon...

Patience

J'ai le Lego.
J'ai la fille.
J'ai qu'à attendre...
----

I have the Lego.
I have the daughter.
I just have to wait...
----
Some favourite fictional characters came to mind recently. Thought it would be funny to see how many of you will recognise all three of the following:
Carrot
Puddleglum
Snufkin

(For the last one there is a hint if you have followed previous posts)

Soft drugs ... Drogues douces

Le long week-end était bienvenu.

Not too dangerous as drugs go - but I've got a few more spots on my nose than usual!

Decent toffee seems hard to come by round here, so I was very pleased to have received these ones. It's the extra hard tooth-extracting variety.

The weather has picked up a bit here - the long weekend was on and off (well, on-off-off-on, in that order), but it was cool to chill out and not do too much. Except overdose on films, of which 50 First Dates, Legend of Zorro, Robots and half of the Last Trapper (if that even exists in English). Oh, and going to bed too late and having long siestas at the same time as Kalia.

What it's all about ...

This is photo which sums up the joy of fatherhood. It's just so cute to have a Little My hanging onto your hand.
"When times are good, be happy" (Ecclesiastes 7 : 14)
(For those who ponder on my references to Little My, it's a kind of 'in' joke between me and myself. If you would like to be included, look here. No particular simlarities between my Little My and the character in the Moomin books, but the name is cute)

Too late ... trop tard

This photo was taken on the same evening as the one from the last post.

Too late to write any more, sorry...

What is MAF? ...

One day last week there was quite a lot of rain, then a rainbow, followed by a 'sun well' just in one spot, which I tried to catch on camera. My clever autofocus camera decided otherwise, and figured the droplets on the window were more interesting. I think the camera was probably right.

When we came back from visiting my brother a few weeks ago, I promised to tell you about the MAF. Given that my brother has managed to bring his blog out of hibernation, it seems like this is a good time.

The Mission Aviation Fellowship has been flying people in light aeroplanes in many countries of the third world for years now. They transport people in need of urgent medical treatment, doctors, supplies, missionaries and more, in places where there are no other means of transport, or the transport is very difficult (floods, bandits, no bridges etc). My brother and his family will shortly be leaving for 4 years in Dodoma, Tanzania, where he will be 'financial controller' - or something like that - counting all the pennies to make sure that every penny counts.

It's a big undertaking for a family with three small children, and I wish them lots of courage (sorry, that's franglais) and also joy together. It's kind of strange to think that one brother will be in rich Switzerland, whilst the other is in poor Africa.

But there's still plenty of human misery hidden behind the riches.

Rive gauche

Here you have a photo of Little My in a classic pose - standing on her box to look out of the kitchen window, with her scarf on (she puts it on herself, thank you very much), with something in her mouth. Miss independence - she's not even 14 months old, and she already wants to walk on the wall on the lakeside - and with nobody holding her hand!

She's very well, despite 3 or 4 ugly molars poking out in the back of her moht. She's still growing, and has started making her own 'jokes' - putting things in the wrong place and waiting for you to react etc., it's very cute. She likes to climb - mostly up on to the sofa to look in the bird's cage and scare them by jumping up and down!
