New era ...

(Rebecca trying out her new car seat, she makes a lot less fuss on car journies, now that she can see out of the window).

I know you're probably expecting me to talk about an american president. But the new era that has dawned here today is that Kalia has finally worked out how to use the mouse, thanks to her Babar computer game. Who knows where this will end?

To be honest, I prefer to have a child stuck in front of a computer than in front of a TV. But they aren't the only two options available...

Car hate ... Haine d'auto

It's just over a year since car hate started (and continue here and here)

The 'experts' at the Ford garage couldn't propose anything, except charging me an arm and two legs to change the clutch.

So here is a photo of the guilty part. In the end, it was while mulling the problem over with a colleague that we worked out the problem - the clutch pedal return spring. Without that, over time the master cylinder loses its contents, and the clutch disengages less and less - gradually wearing out the disk till you have to replace the whole kaboodle. I half-wonder if the garage didn't deliberately not find it - so that I'd have to go back and pay them again for another new clutch.

Anyhows, I've been driving 6 months without now - just have to remember to pull the clutch pedal up from time to time. I'll get round to changing it some time, if I can find a way of buying Ford parts...

Meanwhile, with this cold weather, the car is having increasing difficulty starting.

A defence of inefficiency (3) ...

(Following on from 1 and 2).

In business as in health, we're told that lean is good, fat is bad. So everyone needs to thin down to be 'with it'.

But that's a theory for rich people. The skinny ones won't look so clever when/if food becomes scarce.

And when the recesssion comes, the hyper-rationalised, cut-down, lean & mean company (or society) will have to start chopping bits off itself to eat!

Maybe my example is too far-fetched, but let's consider the village postman. He drives around, delivering the mail. But sometimes he'll also accept to take parcels and send them from the Post Office, or give someone a lift back to the village, or call the social services or a doctor if someone's not well, or buy a few groceries for a house-bound pensioner.

But when things get 'rationalised' (or privatised), some suit will turn up with a list of 'objectives' and a 'mission statement', to tell that postman that his job is delivering mail, nothing else.

So instead of being useful, the postman will just be 'efficient'. Ironic that while industry has largely abandoned Taylorisation, the service sector can't get enough of it...

Community is priceless, so who's going to bother investing in it? Not an 'efficient' company, in any case.

One more reason to fight privatisation of public services.

(Unrelated economic heresy: I wonder whether deflation wouldn't be good for the planet?)

Big girl ... Grande fille

Thumbs up for Kalia who is sleeping a long way from her parents tonight.

We went to visit friends in Geneva today, and when we started to leave, she said "veux pas go home" (as usual). They offered to have her for the night and bring her back tomorrow morning. She accepted straight away, without batting an eyelid.

Maybe it's more of an accomplishment for her parents than for her!

Rebecca has started standing up, hanging on to anything and/or anyone. She wants to walk - already! Even if it seems a bit too soon to us. It's the beginning of the end, war will shortly break out between her and her big sister, who has so far only really understood half of the meaning of the word 'share'.

So we the parents are going to be spending a few years as UN-style peacekeepers, with all the potential for job satisfaction that the metaphor implies...

Meep Widdinter

(Kalia holding a rabbit at the nativity scene at our church. The other members of the family starred as Joseph, Mary and Jesus!)

Our God, heaven could not hold Him
Nor earth contain*

Strange, that for someone who's spiritual barometer is suffering from disuse, these few words should reach tear-jerking parts of my inwards**.

I admit that I am getting soppy with 'old age'. Ok, not soppy. Let's just say that in my book, you either harden with time, or soften. I'll let you guess which way I'm heading...

But my reading of these words (possibly wrong) is about heaven bursting at the seams with a God who can't be held back from coming into the life of the universe He created, the people He created. And that touches me deeply.

Why?

I guess it triggers memories about a God I used to know,
or had the time to know,
or took the time to know.

(If by this point you're throwing your arms up in horror and praying on your knees for the salvation of my backsliding soul, that's fine, please carry on... )

I don't think I'm backsliding, I'm sort of still pointing in the right-ish direction, faintly doggy-paddling against the current. Time just seems to slip through my hands, and when I do have the odd bit that is not occupied by work or children, I seem to only have little dribbles of psychological energy, (for doing stuff like this blog), and not the gallons of ultra-refined kerosene required to get my 747-like spiritual self airborn.

But I live in hope of better times, with better nights, longer wings, lighter loads, a few tail winds, maybe a kick(-up-the-wotsit-)start or two.

Is this a prayer?

I guess it might be.

(*This was my pre-Google Harold recollection of the words, the correct ones are here)
(**It's ok Mum, that one was deliberate)

Stuff ... Choses

Puis on fonce vers Noël.

Haven't been up to much posting here lately, except a few photos.

Rebecca has had various lurgys over the last few months, and now she's started work on teeth 3 and 4.

Work is a bit stress as well. The project I've been working on works in theory, but not in practice. I've never been very comfortable in the zone between theory and reality (you may remember that coffee packing machine in Belgium), so I guess it's time for me to face up to my fears!

And we hurtle on towards Christmas. Fortunately Madame is there to prompt me to write the occasional Christmas card.

Last day of work before holidays tomorrow, good thing too.

And the world is not well. You've probably noticed that I've become very geo-political in the last months on this blog. I read a quote in the paper the other day that I rather liked, "It is an irony of history that the communists are no longer there to witness the implosion of capitalism that they had predicted". Some still maintain that capitalism isn't broken, it just needs tweaking. The least we can posit is that 10% profit is unsustainable, and too good to be true, and trying to run your economy on that basis is a recipe for disaster.

Can we try another recipe please?

Anyway, Happy Christmas to those of you who's circumstances allow it.

Sorry, untranslatable. Learn French.

Sorry to go on about this ...

In case it isn't obvious, I seriously believe that this is a BIG issue.

Nightmare ... Cauchemar

(Having trouble with blogging recently. Not that I'm lacking ideas, just they tend to go out of my head, or suddenly seem much less interesting, when it actually comes to typing them up. Having said which...)

The other night I woke up in a cold sweat from a nightmare where I was in a world in 'societal breakdown'. The kind of dystopia where everyone stays barricaded in their houses, ekeing out their reserves of pasta, hiding from the marauding bands who go looking for something to eat at night...

Shows that I'm a pessimist even when I'm sleeping, I guess.

Can't really remember the details, but I can still remember the feeling of blind panic and fear in my gut.

I don't expect it to happen here, but elsewhere it probably will, and there have already been plenty of food riots.

Two weeks ago, I took a day off to go and see the Foire de la Saint-Martin - part of the local lore, which has been going for more than 500 years (pretty mind blowing).

We walked all the way into town - pretty good going for Kalia, as I took the girls the previous night to see them start cooking the cow on a spit.

Special things for special days - a go on the merry go round.

'Big one Daddy!' En plus elle a presque tout mangé.

'Big one Daddy!' She really liked that hotdog, and nearly managed to finished it.

Here you can see: some of the fun with 'soldiers' dressed in period costumes, the grotty weather, all the different stalls set out across the market place, and the Chateau de l'Aile in the background, which the town recently sold to a private investor for 1 franc...

Cute ... Mignonne

Here's a photo of Kalia all togged up to go to a wedding.

By the way, I realised the other day that I'd accidentally posted this to 2002, so you might not have seen it.
