Solution

Have you had any time to think about the question I asked the other day (the one with the car, the doors and the goats?). Intuitively, one figures that with two doors and one car, the chance of finding the car is fifty-fifty.

But it's not the case - in fact you should change doors, if you do you've got twice as much chance of winning the car.

If you want to try it for yourself, click here.

If you didn't understand any of that, or if you still need convincing, or if you want to know anything else about this problem, go to Wikipedia

Shopping

Kalia is now 8 months old - the age where babies suddenly become scared of being all alone. I tried it out this morning - even a few seconds out of eyeshot and she starts complaining! It's not all bad - you get a big cuddle when you pick her up, and she's started 'being shy' and snuggling into your neck when there are 'strangers'. I'm pleased to say that I'm home often enough to not count as a stranger!

For those of you who haven't read that book about the curious dog incident, (that I managed to not read in one sitting), here is a little 'problem' which got me thinking:
You're on a game show, there are three doors, behind one door there is a car (the prize), and behind the two others there are goats. The host invites you to pick a door, without opening it. Knowing where the car is, he then opens one of the other doors with a goat behind it. You are then offered the choice of sticking with your original choice, or choosing the other door.

What do you think, should you stick or change?

Answer tomorrow.

Quoideneuf ?

I have to admit that it was seeing the site visit statistics for the last few days that has woken me into action. Have to give you people something to read!

What news? Well, Kalia now has 4 teeth, and there seem to be more on the way, as she keeps on gnawing on anything she can get her hands on (except - obviously - the things that were specifically designed for teething babies). She's also worked out how to 'walk' around her cot, holding onto the bars - and is very pleased with herself. I guess there's a chance she may miss out the crawling stage altogether, as she still doesn't seem to have got the hang of it.

(For those of you who are interested in fonts, there are a whole load of free ones here).

(It's supposed to be a caterpillar!)

Off day ... sculpture ou démolition

You may remember that I spent some time agonising over whether doing a sculpture course was too bourgeois or not. In the end I signed up and was due to go this Saturday.

However, I turned up 10 minutes late, and there was no one there! I the assocation which organised the course, and the lady who answered told me to keep on looking 'cos it was "round there somewhere". I kept on looking for a good hour, phoned back to ask if there wasn't a mobile number I could contact the tutor on. But this time I just got an answer phone.

At this point, I started to get a bit annoyed.

I ended up driving the 15 miles back home, turning on the computer and plugging into Google to find the mobile number of the tutor, who I left a message with, and she phoned me back at about 11.30. We agreed that with nearly half the day gone there wasn't much point me in driving back again.

In the afternoon I went to the church (the new building which we are working on), and was very fortunate in that some demolition needing doing. I spent the afternoon happily venting my frustration with a sledgehammer (on the ceiling, which was a bit tricky).

Always better than keeping it all in and ending up depressed, ill, or hitting someone!

Today I sent off a suitably miffed-but-oh-so-very-polite-but-you-jolly-well-better-get-your-act-together letter, requesting a new date, and a map this time.

monde.

Amen.
© Chépas.

(Today I'm taking the risk of sharing with you a prayer that has been with me for some time now. Whether you 'believe' or not, I invite you to ask yourself whether this corresponds with your idea of God.)

Lord, God and Father, I am coming to you from the depths of my failure. Despite all my efforts to try and be what you want me to be - or even what I would like to be - I am just wearing myself out and am going to end up hating myself.

I really am one of those poor in spirit for whom you came.

I want to abandon the condemnatory attitude which I have towards myself, and ask you to accord me the grace of seeing myself the way you do.

Thus, by learning to take your vision of me more seriously than my own, I will learn to live peacefully in the midst of the other poor of this world.

Amen

Teeth ... Dents

At last, I've managed to get photographic evidence of Kalia's two teeth. Unfortunately, she seems to have inherited them from her Daddy - a bit wonky. The top two are on the way.

This weekend we had two different parties - one on Saturday and one on Sunday - with lots of very nice people, and we had nothing to prepare so it was 100% pleasure and relaxation.

Kalia still hasn't quite sussed out the crawling thing - she's understood that she can move around on all fours, she just hasn't worked out how yet. But she already has her sights fixed on all those interesting cupboards and drawers...

Calming up ... décalme

Hereiyam.

I bumped into a friend this week who said he sometimes reads my blog, so that gave me a little bit more oomph for writing, even if I'm still not very inspired.

After the birth of Kalia, we calmed down a bit on our hectic schedule. Now, slowly and impercebtily, things are hotting up again. We're pretty close to having something every weekend from now to Christmas!

So I may end up having more things to write about, but less time to write them.

Rest ... Repos

Bank holiday weekend here in the canton of Vaud (I ought to explain that here in Switzerland, even the bank holidays depend on which canton you're in - though I think they've managed to agree on Christmas!). We've made the most of it and had a good rest.

Saturday afternoon we had a very pleasant time with some friends and their kids. Sunday afternoon we had a loooooong afternoon nap, and last night Kalia slept better than usual, and thus so did we.

Nice relaxed day today as well, spent the afternoon putting the world to rights with a couple of friends, and playing with Kalia.

(The photo was taken in July, on our trip to Yvoire)

Cold ... froid

It's gone cold all of a sudden this weekend. Funny how your body adapts to the seasons. This morning, 10 degrees felt like we were going to freeze to death, but in a couple of months time, if we get 10 degrees in the morning, we'll be saying "beautiful weather this morning, eh?".

I love the seasons - every one of them - I think I'd get SAD living in a country where the weather never changed. Now that I've got the age where years don't seem to last for ever, the seasons are like the background rythmn to the music of life.

(Sorry, I just came over all poetic)

Another tooth ... dent 2

The second tooth started poking its way through today, so miss was a bit miz today. Apart from that, no earth-shaking news here, I'm a bit low on inspiration, and I've lost the list of ideas I made when I did have inspiration

Ho hum.

No connection ... sans rapport

Just a quote and a link, with nothing in common.

The quote (google doesn't want to tell me by who):
"Any civilisation is only three meals away from anarchy".

The link:
Go here, and click on "Screen 1" (I expect this link will die fairly soon, in which case try searching for 'In the rough blur' in google and see what you can find).

Time ... le temps

A very long time a go, I asked a question:
Can you think of something which you can't see, you can't smell, you can't hear, taste or touch, but which is nevertheless so real that nobody doubts it's existence?
And then I left you to stew. I was interested to see what people might think, but I only ever got one reaction.

It's time.

I'd say that time is the most intangible and indubitable 'thing' that we experience.

I'm not saying that time is God, nor that the existence of time proves the existence of God; just that time is a rebuttal of the "believe it when I see it" argument.

And when you ask questions like 'How can time be everywhere at once?' you get an inkling that some of our questions about God may simply be unanswerable.

I haven't got to the bottom of it yet, but it makes for interesting thinking.

This is a photo of Blonay castle, not far from where we live. Still the same family living in it as when it was built, well, I guess it's probably their descendants. They haven't invited us round yet, don't know why.

These next few days, probably not much time to post, so I'll try and dig out some of my 'old' photos so you have something to look at.

7 months 1 tooth ... 7 mois 1 dent

Kalia is 7 months old today, and doing very well thank you. She's not been sleeping very well these last few nights, but yesterday we finally realised why - she's produced her first tooth!

This photo is not particularly recent, but I think it's quite cute. We were moving the moses basket out of her room to make space for the cot - and we stuck her in the basket to play. She pushed herself up as far as she could to see what was going on.

She's just starting to push herself up onto all fours. She hasn't yet realised that she can move around like this, but we're already preparing ourselves for life with a mobile baby.

Summer is a cummin' back ... le retour du chaud

After a couple of weeks of fairly rotten weather (didn't bother me to much, just glad I took my holiday in July) this week there's been a bit of summer again. It was even hot today, not that I really noticed the difference in our air-conditioned office.

A little dig for my colleauge who is off on the honeymoon of a lifetime tomorrow - to Tahiti. It is really a very very long way away, we looked it up on Google Earth today - it's just a long way from everywhere, surrounded by lots of sea. You wonder how anyone ever discovered it! At least it should be far enough away to not get any calls from work (leaving his mobile at home will help too!).
