Not a mystery photo ... une tuile

This isn't a mystery photo, just a cool idea of what you can do with an old roof tile. I thought it was really neat.

Further to yesterday's thorny question, here is another which may prod you in the direction I've been thinking: Can you think of something which you can't see, you can't smell, you can't hear, taste or touch, but which is nevertheless so real that nobody doubts it's existence?

Second one ... Enigme 2

I think I'm going a bit soft in my old age, this one's a bit too easy I reckon. Given that some people only log in every few days, I'll wait a while before posting the answer to the previous one.

The last two evenings we were invited out, so no time for blogging.

As further proof that I'm going soft, I wanted to share this story with you, which I admit brought a tear to my eye... Seems to me that suffering is not evenly shared out in the world.

Here's another little something to chew on (as I have been recently): you often hear people say something like, "I don't believe in God, I only believe what I see". Question: Do you think this argument holds water? What would you say?

I think I've found a cool way to think this one, but I'm going to let in stew a bit before committing it to blog.

One forgets ... on oublie

(First photo in the series (of 5) mystery photos. A clue - the solution to this one is hidden somewhere in the previous weeks' posts. If you want to share your solution, hit the orange 'comments' link below)

First up - a rather cool blog I discovered today - Darth Vader's blog! Rather stunningly well written (considering all the rubbish that's around), I just can't believe how many people there are out there doing good stuff for free! Warning: some collateral damage involved.

//Everyone told us to make the most of having a little baby, because "it goes so fast" and "you forget". It's very true, I've realised. This evening looking at Kalia on the nappy-changing table - which she's starting to fill - I tried to remember how she was when she was 'little'. The memory is already faint, intangible, almost just a theory. A bit like those childhood 'memories' where you're not sure if you really do remember, or if it's just the photos and being told about it that you remember.

All of this encourages me to 'drink in' each moment, and to continue trying to practice the philosophy which I adopted several years ago - to not live in expectation - 'when the sun shines', 'when the weekend comes', 'when I'm next on holiday', 'when I'm married', 'when I'm retired' ... ('when I'm dead'!!).

Days come one at a time, and that's the best way to take 'em.

Good day ... bonne journée

This is another photo from our trip on the lake last weekend. I took this one because of the trees. I like trees, and especially in Spring with all the different greens.

We had a good day together today. I'm chuffed to have been able to spend some time with Kalia. Sometimes during the week, when I get back in the evening I have the impression that she's not too sure whether she recognises me. But at the weekend she has enough time to remember who I am!

Our course was on the topic of anorexia/bulimia this weekend. It was very very interesting. It's amazing how complex our relationship with food/eating can be - and how its interrelated with many other areas of our being. Maybe I'll do a post on the subject some time.

Tomorrow, start of a new series of mystery photos...

What's EPIC? Well, if you have the time (8 minutes) and the bandwidth, check out this jem, which is a sort of futurology thingy about the internet and world information in the future. I thought it was quite astute.

Won't be much happening here (blogically speaking) as we have our course tomorrow evening, maybe I'll get round to something on Saturday.

I'll see if I can at least do you some photos tomorrow.

Oh, I had the bath in the end, last night, even if it was past my 11 o'clock watershed.

  • J'avais mes lunettes 'cool'

Quelle souffrance...

Here, as promised, is a photo from our trip on the lake this weekend.

The careful observer will notice that:
  • The weather was excellent
  • I wore my 'cool' shades
  • I wore my pink shirt (Yves Saint Laurent, I'll have you know)
  • I'm getting a bit too jowly
  • In the right light, the grey hairs don't show up on photo!
For the impatient readers who don't see what this has to do with a bath, the answer is - nothing!

The bath story is that as I mentioned a while ago, I'm partial to a good soak now and again. And for the last two weeks this has been my sole ambition - a fairly modest one methinks (methought). But nope, somehow something always crops up and I still haven't had the time (there is the slot from 11 till 7 in the morning, but I try to sleep then).

Just another of life's little frustrations...

Red nose day ... nez rouge

...Sorry for the gap - it was a busy weekend.

Sunday we made the most of the good weather and did a tour of this end of the lake (by boat, not car). The sun was shining bright, and obviously (it having snowed only a few weeks ago), we didn't think about sun tan lotion or anything like that. So we all came back with bright red noses (except Kalia, who had been dutifully kept in the shade).

Took a couple of photos too, which I shall be sharing with you shortly.

Regression

(In my list of things I like, I mentioned the greenness of spring, this photo is a good example of what I mean.)

I haven't talked about Kalia and her universe for quite a while: After a couple of weeks where things seemed to be going well - sleeping in her own cot etc, there seems to be a slight regression over the past few weeks. It would be nice to be able to blame it on our trip to Italy, but it started beforehand.

We're not too sure how to handle it, haven't got the energy to trawl through all those books we bought! At the moment we're winging it on intuition (feminine, mostly), pending our next visit to the lady who knows (pediatrician).

We have friends coming to stay for a 'holiday' this weekend; I wonder whether they realise what they've let themselves in for!

(Little plug here for Make Poverty History. I know I've already mentioned it, but I would really encourage you to sign up and do what little they ask. I don't know whether they'll be able to pull it off, but they've certainly managed to line up a lot of big names, so hopefully at least they'll get noticed. I personally think that world poverty is THE issue of our time, and that our descendants will look back on our passivity on this issue, the way we look back on our forefathers complacency over slavery)

Toscana 2

(Suite des aventures)

Jeudi (suite) : discuter, discuter, manger (trop), dormir (enfin!)

(Following on from yesterday)

Thursday (pm): talk, talk, eat (too much), and to bed (at last!)
Friday: Blair elected for a third time - I ponder the fact that 100 years ago, this news would have taken at least a week to get here. Apart from that, I'm not sure what to think.
Evening, visit to see la famiglia: traffic jams on the motorway + talk, talk, eat (too much), return at 1 in the morning, pinching myself all the way so as not to fall asleep.
Saturday: K wakes up at 5 in the morning, and isn't tired anymore. Mamma manages to persuade her to hold off till 7, at which point Daddy takes over and carries her around for an hour or so, then swap again and I sleep till 11!
Invited out for lunch to a family where she is English, he American. There is also the son + future daughter-in-law (Romanian). I love this mixing of cultures.
(Talk, talk, eat (too much) all the same!).

Toscana

01h00 Mme me réveille, me file K et va se doucher.
02h00 espresso + départ direction Gd. St. Bernard
11h45 arrivé, discuter, discuter, manger (trop), dormir (enfin!)

(Did you know that you can see a bigger version of each photo if you click on it?)
Contrary to what I posted yesterday, I’m not going to retro-post our journey under last Thursday, as I don’t want to confuse too many readers. So I’ll just paste it in here (for the technophiles amongst you, I wrote it on my Palm during the weekend – shows that I’m in serious danger of becoming a blogaholic!)

The journey there went like this:
(Wednesday evening) 21.30 I’m asleep, K finishes her feed, Mme packs the suitcases.
01h00 Mme wakes me up, plonks K next to me, and goes for a shower.
02h00 espresso + set off southwards to Grand St. Bernard tunnel
04h05 K wakes up, we stop in a truck dormitory in the Aosta valley. Never seen so many stars
04h35 Set off again: K has a job going back to sleep and wails a bit. Usually we’d think she was still hungry, but decide to try it on. She goes to sleep, and Mme too (about time, she’s been up since 06.50!)
07h30 near Bologna, K wakes up again, spends a while looking at her Mamma dozing next to her, before deciding it’s time to make herself heard. We stop at the ‘Autogrill’ for nappy-change, loo-stop, coffee-break and baby-feed. (Do you want to know the difference between Italy and the UK? In Italy, even in a motorway café, everyone stops to ooh and aah at your baby, and we even got a free pain-au-chocolat just because our baby is cute!)
08h45 Set off again; the winding stretch between Bologna-Florence which I usually do rally-style is full of traffic, roadworks and long queues.
11h45 Arrive, talk, talk, eat (too much), and to bed (at last!).

Back home ... de retour

Back home again (and back to work...), after four days in Tuscany - bringing back plenty of photos and ideas for the blog.

Not sure whether I'll have the time this evening to add any more detail, but in the next few days I'm hoping to do some 'retro-posts' and fill in the missing days.

Mont blanc

Here's a photo of Mont Blanc from the Swiss side of the lake.

The week is already over here, as it's the Ascension bank-holiday weekend. We are off to Switzerland tonight - driving at night so that Kalia will sleep, and to avoid the traffic (we hope).

So, don't bother coming back here till Monday (or maybe Sunday evening). Hope you have a good rest till then.

Amelie 4

As promised, here's the photo of Kalia with her pretty little sun hat. Ain't she so cute?

In the absence of any better ideas, here - following on in the Amélie Poulain series - is a list of things I like:
  • The sound of a propeller cargo plane flying high overhead at night when I'm in bed
  • The greenness of spring
  • Sitting out on the balcony on my deck chair with a good book and a cold drink
  • Chatting on a walk with friends
  • Having a good discussion with someone on a subject that we really care about
  • Being snug in bed when it's cold and wet outside
  • Having a good long soak in a very hot bath
  • Going for a quick dip in the lake on a summer evening, after a day's work

Kalia & Sara

Next up in the series 'Kalia and friends', here is a photo of Kalia with Sara, a friend who does the same counselling course as us, and who stayed over at our place on Friday night.

I've got another photo with Kalia in a hat that suits her a bit better, I'll post it tomorrow.

This evening we've got visitors, so I'm just squeezing this post in while waiting to see if they'll manage to find our house!

Fingers! ...

Finger sandwich anyone?

We are very pleased to announce that Friday, Kalia discovered her fingers and hands, and spent the rest of the day rubbing them together a bit like Ebenezer Scrooge! She's now mastering the fine art of getting some of them into her mouth. She started out putting ALL of them in her mouth, but she's wittling down the choice, and it looks like her left index finger may win.

We are very proud, and very pleased too - the dummy's days are numbered!

She was extraordinarily good this weekend - we must have spent about 10 hours in all, sitting down listening or discussing our course. She obviously slept and fed in that time, but also spent impressive stretches sitting there 'following' the discussion.

I'm also very pleased because she talks to me a LOT. I still don't understand a great deal, but I feel very honoured.
