Groves/Darby

Selon votre arrière plan écclésiale, vous aurez peut-être entendu parler de J.N. Darby. Ici parmi les chrétiens en Suisse Romande, il est connu à cause des églises 'darbystes' qui existent encore. C'était intéressant pour moi de l'apprendre, puisque ce que j'avais lu le concernant auparavant (dans ce livre - in English) n'en faisait pas une personne qu'on voudrait suivre. Il me semble que même ici en Suisse, les gens devaient être d'accord avec sa 'position' dans une ancienne dispute en Angleterre avant d'être 'acceptés' dans ses églises.

Ce qui me fascine particulièrement c'est:

• Que la 'dénomination' darbyste a gardé ce même 'ADN': se multipliant par la division et la répudiation mutuelle à cause de 'mauvaise théologie'. Cette dynamique est très proche de celle que j'ai connu dans l'église où j'ai grandi, où l'accent était très fortement sur 'la bonne croyance' (j'allais écrire 'bonne théologie', mais ce serait trop gentil).
• Qu'il a était averti de tout ça bien à l'avance par un homme d'une incroyable prescience: A.N. Groves, dans une lettre qui sera le sujet de quelques billets ici ces prochains jours.

Si vous êtes pressés, l'original (trouvé ici), en 'vieil anglais' est ici. Je l'ai traduit en 'anglais moderne' avant de le traduire en français. Si vous avez le temps vous pouvez le lire tout de suite, mais autrement je vais le présenter sur plusieurs jours en des extraits un peu plus digestes.

La phrase clé est celle-ci:
"Vous serez plus connus par les choses que vous êtes contre que par les choses que vous êtes pour"

Je vous invite à méditer sur cette phrase dans le contexte de votre propre foi et vie d'église...

Depending on your ecclesial background, you may or may not have hear of J.N. Darby. In Christian circles in Switzerland he is better know because of the 'Darbyist' churches which still exist here. It was interesting for me to learn this, because what I had read about him (mostly here) put him decidedly on the wrong side of history: not the kind of person you'd expect people to want to follow. I believe that 'his' people here in Switzerland had to 'agree' with him in the unresolved disputes in the UK, before being 'accepted'.

What is particularly fascinating to me is this:

• that the darbyist 'denomination' seems to have retained that 'DNA': multiplying by division: mutual shunnings of brothers and sisters with the 'wrong' theology. This dynamic is very close to the heavy accent on 'right believing' that I grew up with (I originally wrote 'right theology', but I think that's being too kind).
• that he was warned of how this would all turn out by an incredibly insightful man A.N. Groves, in a letter which is going to be the subject of the next few blog posts.
