Les Grands Loges

Quand on s'est décide à aller au mariage à Chalons-en-Champagne, je me suis mis à la recherche d'un lieu pour loger notre petite famille. Après une première tentative infructueuse, j'ai fini par envoyer un mail 'en masse' à toutes les adresse que j'ai trouvé sur le site de l'office de tourisme.

Il y a eu un bon retour, et pour finir notre choix s'est porté sur une Chambre d'Hôtes en dehors de la ville.

Once we decided that we would be going to the wedding, I set about finding somewhere for us to stay. After being turned down by one hotel because there were too many of us for one room, I ended up sending out a mail to all the addresses I could find on the tourist office site.

Had a surprising number of answers back, and in the end opted to stay in a B&B outside of town.

Cet un couple d'agriculteurs qui gèrent la Chambre d'Hôtes. Leurs enfants sont parti, donc 'ça les occupe' et leur permet de voir 'du pays' tout en restant chez eux. Ils ont le don d'accueil commun à tous les gens de campagne que j'ai jamais rencontré de ma vie. La partie Chambres d'Hôte est amenagé dans la grange de l'autre côté de la cour de la résidence principale.

The couple who run the B&B are a farming couple. Their children have left home, so running a B&B gives them 'something to do', and means they get to meet lots of people. They are very hospitable and chatty, which is nice. The B&B bit is on the opposite side of the courtyard to where the couple stay.

Pour le plus grand plaisir des filles, on était logé dans la chambre 'Nounours'. Avec salle de bains et toilette. En bas, il y a une cuisine/salle à manger, où le très copieux petit déjeuner vous attend à l'heure que vous demandez.

Nous n'avons payé que 55 euros par nuit, pour toute la famille, petit déjeuner compris.

We were in the 'teddy bear' room, where there were tens and tens of teddies everywhere, much to Kalia and Rebecca's delight. En suite bathroom and toilet. Downstairs is a communal dining room/kitchen, where your (plentiful) breakfast awaits you in the morning.

Cost us 55 euros per night, for 4 of us. Breakfast included.

Very well situated between two motorways. Good stopping off place if you're travelling North/South or East/West.

Wedding 4 ... Mariage 4

Le jour du mariage, il a fait moche toute la journée, avec une pluie fine incessante.

Heureusement, le lendemain nous a permis de nous réconcilier avec la Marne.

The day of the wedding, it rained all day long, the kind of fine rain that soaks you in minutes.

Fortunately, the next day was much nicer, and we decided that it wasn't such a bad place to visit.

Wedding 3 ... Mariage 3

Au 'retour', Kalia s'est fait servir du gâteau, et est allé s'installer au soleil avec les grandes filles, comme une grande.

The day after the wedding, French tradition has it that those who've come from along way away come back to finish the 'left overs'.

Kalia helped herself to some cake, and went and sat out in the sun next to the 'big girls' to eat it.

Wedding 2 ... Mariage 2

Voilà une photo des mariés (quand-même !). Stacie est américaine, Paul-Gabriel est breton. Je l'ai connu il y a fort fort longtemps, quand j'étais à la Maison Blanche (à Dinan, pas Washington!).

Here's a photo of the couple who's wedding we went to. Stacie is American, Paul-Gabriel is from Brittany. He's a friend from a long time back when I was in Brittany.

Wedding ... Mariage

"500km à voiture avec des enfants, ça use, ça use..."

Pour aller au mariage, on a fait 2x 500km en 2x 6h. Les filles ont été majoritairement très sage et se sont bien adaptées.

Bien sûr, c'était plus difficile pour Rebecca qui apprend toujours à marcher, et qui peut difficilement se distraire avec des jouets, etc.

Kalia a eu le droit de venir devant à côté de moi un petit moment, elle était très fière !

We did 300 odd miles there, and 300 back to go to the wedding.

The girls were pretty good, though it was hairy at times with Rebecca - she's still getting into walking, so doesn't take kindly to having to sit still.

Kalia got to sit in front next to me for part of the journey, she was very chuffed.

Tractors! ... Tracteurs

Ce week-end, on a été à un mariage à Chalons-en-Champagne, où on a logé dans une chambre d'hôte à la ferme. Le samedi matin, j'ai profité du pretexte des enfants pour me faire faire un tour de la ferme. Kalia a ainsi pu essayer les 5 tracteurs, du plus petit au plus grand !

We went away to a wedding this weekend. Stayed in a B&B at a farm. I made the most of having children, used them as an excuse to get a guided tour. Kalia got to try out the seats of all 5 tractors!

Je me demande ces temps si les alarmistes (surtout de droite, et américains) qui font la guerre à l'ONU, par crainte que ce soit l'embryon du gouvernement global de l'antichrist, ne se soient pas trompé de cible. Car, pendant ce temps, les multinationaux se font de plus en plus grands, de plus en plus puissants, et de moins en moins nombreux. Dans beaucoup d'endroits, et dans beaucoup de domaines, ils ont pris des pouvoirs qui étaient jadis dévolus à l'état.

//Dans un autre domaine, il y a 20 ans, on était convaincu que c'était par les armes nucléaire, ou l'énergie atomique, que le monde connaîtrait sa fin 'brûlante'.

Maintenant, je me demande si ce n'est pas plutôt par le réchauffement de la planète.

Comme quoi, notre interprétation des écritures est vachement influencée par notre environnement.

I've been wondering recently if the right-wing alarmists who tilt at the UN as being the future world goverment of the Anti Christ haven't missed the mark. Because all the while, the multinational companies have been becoming bigger and bigger, more powerful, and fewer in number. In many places and domains, they have wrested powers that would normally belong to the state.

//In another 'eschatological' realm, 20 years ago, believers where mostly convinced that the firey end of the world would come from nuclear weapons or atomic power (I mean, Chernobyl means Wormwood, what more proof could we need?).

Nowadays, I'd be looking more at global warming as the potential source.

Our interpretation of scripture is much more influenced by our times than we would like to think.

Scary ... Inquiétant

(Il y a quelques jours, Kalia m'a accompagné en ville depuis chez nous en vélo, ici à la Migros)

La semaine passée il a fait passablement beau. Ce qui m'a choqué c'était la force du soleil en ce début d'avril. Si ça tape déjà fort comme ça, j'ose pas imaginer au mois de juillet !

Moi qui aime pas le sec et le chaud, je suis bien content d'habiter à côté du plus grand lac d'Europe (88.9 billion m³ d'eau douce) .

Last week the weather was quite nice here. I was mildly shocked by the strength of the sun, when it peeked past the clouds. If it's already hitting hard like that in April, I wonder what July and August will be like?!

Not being a great lover of hot and dry, I'm very glad that I live next to Europe's biggest lake (88.9 billion m³ of fresh water).

La réponse à la question de l'autre jour (qu'ont toutes ces choses en commun), c'est moi. Cette liste est ce que ma rendu l'ordinateur de l'orientation professionnelle quand j'étais à l'université, après avoir répondu à un paquet de questions.

J'ai toujours aimé la diversité de la liste, même s'il y a un peu trop de 'Engineer' vers la fin.

The answer to the other day's question (what do all of these careers have in common) is ME!

The list is what the careers advice centre at university spat out when I'd finished answering all its questions.

I quite like the eclectic flavour of the list, even if it does tail off into endless permutations of engineer at the end.

I guess I'd be something between a Computer Systems Programmer and a Computer Systems Analyst.

La crise financière est devenu crise économique, et maintenant crise de confiance.

Avant, on se méfiait des politiciens et des financiers parce qu'on les soupçonnait d'être malhonnête (à juste titre, pour certains). Maintenant on les soupçonne tout simplement d'être incompétents. C'est les apprentis sorciers qui touillent tous les boutons qu'ils trouvent dans une folle espoir que "quelque chose va se passer".

Bon, donc d'un côté on a Sarkozy, Gordon Brown et Obama. Et de l'autre Bill Gates et Joseph Stiglitz. Je sais qui j'aurait tendance à croire.

Il y a un très long article ici (malheureusement en anglais, et assez 'polémique') qui m'a aidé à mieux comprendre un peu mieux ce qui s'est passé. Ca n'inspire pas franchement la confiance. Mais il ne fallait pas autant pour se poser la question : Est-ce qu'on demanderait à l'arsoniste d'éteindre le feu qu'il a allumé ?

Je vois avec inquiétude plusieurs pays (ceux où je suis un peu les infos - UK, FR, US) où le gouvernement a donné beaucoup d'argent pour repêcher des institutions financières, et ces dernières ont continué à verser des primes complètement démesurées à leurs dirigeants. Je pourrais m'indigner, mais je n'ai pas assez de mots, et ça prendrait trop de place, et d'autres le font déjà. Ce que je trouve alarmant c'est que ces dirigeants ne semblent toujours pas voir où est le problème, ni se sentir responsable pour ce qui est arrivé. Surtout, ce qui est effrayant c'est que ce sont des choses qui peuvent aggraver sérieusement la déstabilisation de nos sociétés - quand les choses vont mal, et en plus le peuple commence à se méfier, et même détester, la classe dirigeante, ça se présente mal. Les coups d'état ont déjà commencé, et sont loin d'avoir fini.

Voilà mon plan pour sauver l'économie, et la planète. Il tient en deux propositions :

1. Ce n'est pas mon idée, mes j'y souscris entièrement: Un dirigeant d'entreprise ne peut pas être payé plus que 20x que le plus bas salaire de son entreprise. Ou mieux, (parce qu'on sous-traiterait tous les boulots à bas salaire pour contourner), il faudrait que chaque pays ait un salaire minimum et un salaire maximum.
2. Limiter le profit ou rendement de toute entreprise ou toute sorte d'investissement à 5%. "Mais ça briderait l'économie !" Et oui, justement, c'est ce dont on a besoin pour sauver la planète et arrêter de produire, produire, produire.

The financial crisis turned into an economic crisis, and now it's a crisis of confidence.

Previously, we were wary of politicians and financiers because we suspected they were crooks. Now we are wary because they appeart to be just plain incompetent. Like the sorcerer's apprentice, running round pushing madly on all the buttons they can find, hoping that "something will happen".

So, on the one hand we have Obama, Gordon Brown and Sarkozy. On the other hand, Bill Gates and Joseph Stiglitz. I know who my money's on.

There is a long, and slightly crude, article here which helped me to understand the mechanics of what happened. It doesn't really inspire one to great confidence. But the really simple question is, would you give the arsonist the job of putting out the fire?

I find it very worrying seeing several countries (the ones where I'm midly up to date with the news -UK, FR, US) where the government is handing-out hod-loads of money to 'save' financial institutions, and they are just turning round and passing on outrageous bonuses (yeh, yeh, bonii to you too) to their top brass. I could get indignant about that, but I don't have the words, and it would take up too much space, and others are doing it already. What scares me is that these guys at the top seem to be blind to the problem, and don't seem to feel particularly responsible, and definitely not remorseful. Combined with political pussyfooting, this could make for serious social destabilisation - if things are going badly financially for 'the people' and on top of that they no longer trust - or actively hate - the ruling classes, things are not looking up. There have already been several coups d'état around the world, I strongly suspect there are more yet to come.

Here is my little two-point plan for saving the world:

1. Not my idea, but a good one: No manager can be paid more than 20x more than the lowest paid worker in the company. Or better (to prevent just outsourcing all the menial jobs to get round this restriction), just have a minimum and maximum salary.
2. No company or investment portfolio can return more than 5% profit. "But that would hobble the economy". Yes, precisely. It would help save the planet, and stop us from just producing new stuff for money's sake.
