Late night rant ... Diatribe

(Voilà comment j'aime voir ma fille: en train de bien vivre son enfance !)

Vous m'excuserez cette fois-ci si j'en dit plus en anglais qu'en français. C'est que là je suis en train de lire les documents pour renouveler mon passeport, pour prendre un passeport à Rebecca, et aussi peut-être (vu le prix) un acte de naissance britannique pour Rebecca.

Et voilà que des fous de la sécurité de l'autre côté du monde ont décidé que pour aller chez eux il faut un passeport biométrique. Et voilà que le gouvernement britannique a décidé que je dois avoir un passeport biométrique - même (surtout) si ça coûte plus cher. Même si je n'ai pas le moindre intention d'aller de l'autre côté du monde.

Et combien dois-je débourser pour ce privilège ?
Passé 800 balles pour les trois documents.

Oui, ça c'est 800 CHF !

Je verses !

Et on dit que c'est cher de devenir suisse. A voir, c'est cher de rester anglais. Et en plus, Rebecca (de même que Kalia d'ailleurs) n'est qu'à moitié anglaise, puisqu'elle ne pourra pas transmettre sa nationalité anglaise à ses enfants.

Bon, c'était censé être la version courte...

(Update: Since writing this, I discovered that the 48-page bit is not true - I read the documents wrong. I leave the article as-is 'cos it won't be funny if I start cutting the juicy bits out.)
This evening's broadcast comes from a very unhappy bunny who is reading through british passport application documents. I have to renew mine, get one for Rebecca, and possibly also get her a birth certificate.

I say possibly because (official doc from embassy dixit):
Registration of birth = 212.00 CHF
Certified copy of the entry (birth certificate) = 136.00 CHF
Registered postage = 5.00 CHF

I'm sorry?!

For that price, I'd be expecting a birth certificate written on tibetan yak vellum, hand-embellished by a 12 century monk specially beamed forward in time for the occasion.

And what genius invented splitting off the birth registration from the 'certified copy of the entry' ("haha, that way we can charge them twice the price and they'll never notice"). I'm sure that will really help Rebecca in later life:
"Well you see, I don't have a certificate, but my birth was registered... somewhere."

That's just the birth certificate. Don't get me talking about the passports!

Ok, DO get me talking about the passports.

The goverment of a certain country on the other side of the world have decided that you have to have a biometric passport to visit their country (unless you already live there of course, in which case you have a >1% chance of already being in prison anyway!) (if you're a man- unchecked but convenient statistic).

Yeah, well, fine, so be it.

But now I have to have a biometric passport, even if I've got no intention of going 'over there'. And what's more, I have to buy a 48 page frequent travellers one ("haha, we've got them over a barrel here in Switzerland, might as well make them pay 50-odd francs for 6 extra pieces of paper!")

Can I point out that my current 10-year-old passport has nothing on any of it's 32 pages? And that logically (my late-night logic anyway), if biometric passports are about not needing a visa, then I should need less pages, not more.

And that will cost 279.00 CHF - normal because it is 'new technology' (which has already been hacked - possibly unreliable source :)).

And then there's the passport for Rebecca.

Can anyone explain what possible use a baby passport is? With a photo of a two month-old baby? Which has to last till they're 5 years old? To me, the following paragraph can be paraphrased "no use at all, but we can sting you for more":

"We know that a baby’s appearance changes quickly, but separate passports have been successfully issued to babies and young children for many years without there being any problems about the child’s identity or appearance."

And that will cost 180.00 CHF.

People complain that getting Swiss nationality is expensive. 'Turns out keeping British nationality isn't cheap either!

Maybe all this is just so that we will end up thanking them when they force us to pay 100 quid for an ID card? ("Oh, it's so cheap, and ... thin!")

I don't know what all you voting people are doing over there, but carry on trying, seems something's not quite right yet. Or so it seems to me, in my rather tired and silly state...

In the wars ... malades

Voilà voilà.

La semaine passée, on a appris que Kalia avait une infection urinaire.
Le lendemain, elle a commencé la varicelle.
Hier matin pour moi c'était la diarrhée.
Et hier soir Lucia a tout vomit.

Heureusement, aujourd'hui ça va un peu mieux !

Last week, the doctor phoned to confirm that Kalia has a urine infection.
The next day, she came out with chicken pox.
Yesterday morning, I got dire rear.
Yesterday evening, Lucia had the other end.

Fortunately, today things have been a bit better...

Officially not coping ... Je patauge

Vous l'aurez peut-être constaté. Après un foisonnement d'articles sur ce blog pendant mon congé paternité, ça s'est estompé relativement vite ! En effet, la réalité de la vie de jeune parent nous a ratrappé, et j'ai un peu de peine à suivre. Le courrier en retard commence à ressembler à celui de Gaston Lagaffe, et même si j'ai essayé de faire de l'ordre sur mon bureau au travail hier, ça n'a pas vraiment aidé à mettre de l'ordre dans mes idées !

Je ne sais pas pourquoi, mais vous aurez aussi remarqué ces temps que j'ai pas mal de réflexions politico-économiques. C'est que la mondialisation commence à devenir l'affaire de tout le monde - mais pas en bien ! Il y a certains trucs qui me 'tuent' - par exemple qu'on repêche des banques qui ont joué avec l'argent des autres par simple avarice, alors que les pauvres gens qui perdent leurs maisons sont traités d'idiots. Puis qu'on met à la porte les dirigeants des dites banques, mais juste pour avoir perdu de l'argent, pas parce qu'ils ont foutu en l'air l'économie de la planète.

Par ailleurs, notons que l'Italie est sur le point de repêcher Alitalia - exactement comme la Suisse a essayé de sauver SwissAir. Le résultat sera exactement le même, à mon avis. J'ai lu l'autre jour que l'ex-président d'Alitalia a dit "Alitalia est maudit, il faudrait un exorciste pour le sauver"...

You may have noticed that after a surge in blog production here during my paternity leave, things have quietened rather rapidly... Unfortunately the realities of having a new baby have caught up with me! I don't have the time to read most of my mail, let alone answer it! And though I tried organising my desk at work yesterday, it didn't really help me get my brain organised!

I don't know why, but as you may have noticed, recently I've been thinking a lot about politico-economical subjects. Maybe it's because globalisation has finally become relavant to 'normal' people - though not in a positive way! Some things just get me really annoyed though - like governments bailing out greedy bankers who've been playing with other people's money, while all the people who've had mortgages foreclosed are left high and dry, and taxed with being 'irresponsible'. And the fact that those same banks sack their directors - but just for losing their money, not for having screwed up the world economy in the process!

Note also that Italy is about to try to bail out Alitalia in much the same way as Switzerland tried to bail out SwissAir a few years back. I'd say the result is predictable. I read the other day that the ex-director of Alitalia said "Alitalia is cursed, it would take an exorcist to save it"...

Pop & Grandma

C'est deux derniers week-end, Pop & Grandma sont venus chez nous. Entre deux ils ont fait une petite virée à Interlaken (où il faisait plus beau qu'ici !).

Ils ont gentiment accepté de se loger ailleurs, pour nous laisser 'tranquille' pour coucher et lever les filles. Mais ils ont quand même pu profiter de Rebecca, et Kalia d'eux.

These last two weekends, Pop & Grandma have been with us. In between, they spent the week at Interlaken (where, as it happens, the weather was better than here!).

They kindly accepted to sleep elsewhere, to leave us 'space' to put the girls to bed. But they made the most of Rebecca. And Kalia made the most of them...

FR : J’essaie un truc ‘space’ – c’est d’envoyer un article par email. Je crains que ça ne sortira pas avec la mise en page voulu (p.ex icônes pour les langues), mais ce sera intéressant. (Effectivement, j'ai dû tout retoucher...)

Il y a quelque temps j’avais peint un avenir peu radieux. Certains me font la reproche d’être pessimiste. « Dans un mois (…) on se posera moins la question à savoir si on est en récession, mais de comment (et si ?) on va s’en sortir ».

Pour les pays les plus pauvres, c’est un véritable catastrophe. J’ai entendu à la radio hier qu’en Haïti, où les familles pauvres gagnent environ 2 dollars par jouer, un kilo de riz coûte 10 dollars. C’est un phénomène qui se répand.

Pour certains pays, la sècheresse diminuent les récoltes.
Pour d’autres les intempéries réduisent ou détruisent les récoltes.
Les chinois et indiens se mettent à manger plus.
Les agriculteurs préfèrent faire des bio-carburants que la nourriture.
L’explosion du prix du pétrole rend plus cher la production de la nourriture, et de son transport.

La récession n’aide pas !

Some time ago I predicted a not-too-bright-and-shiny-future for the planet. You may have found me slightly pessimistic (surprise surprise). “In a month (...) we won’t be asking if there’s a recession, but how, and when (and if?) it will end”.

Of course, for the moment I am just an observer. For poor countries, the situation is catastrophic. I heard on the radio yesterday that in Haiti, the average poor family’s income is 2 dollars a day. And a kilo of rice costs 10 dollars!! And Haiti is not the only country to be having ‘food riots’.

For some countries, the problem is drought
For others, last year’s bad weather reduced food production.
The Chinese and Indians are getting richer and eating more
For many farmers, growing crops for bio-fuels is more profitable than growing food.
The massive increase in the price of oil makes (mechanised) food production more expensive, and transport too.

The recession doesn’t help!

(Was I quicker off the mark than the IMF?. Maybe they should employ me!)

Pour ceux qui se rappelle du film le 5ème Elément, il y a le moment ou elle est 'activée' et sa tête part en arrière - voilà une des positions préférées de Rebecca - même réveillée elle a souvent la tête en arrière (pour voir à qui elle a à faire).

Mais pas de rayon de la mort, heureusement...

For those who remember the film The Fifth Element, when she gets 'activated' at the end, she throws her head back - here is a photo of Rebecca in one of her favourite positions - even when she's awake she often has her head like this (to check out who's carrying her).

No killer beam though, fortunately...

Horse ... Cheval

A côté du magasin avec l'avion de chasse, il y avait une foire, et j'avais promis à Kalia qu'on verrait des vaches. Mais voilà que la foire était payante, et il nous restait pas assez de temps pour visiter.

Du coup, j'ai eu des réclamations de vaches pendant tout le voyage de retour.

J'ai sauvé la mise en visitant un manège près de chez nous, ou il y avait des 'Horse'.

Je crois que depuis elle est un peu confuse, on a vu un cheval hier et elle m'a dit 'cow'...

Next to the shop with the fighter plane, there was some kind of agricultural fair, and I'd promised Kalia we would see some cows. But it turned out to not be free, and I didn't think it was worth paying for the few minutes we had left before going home.

So I had plaintive calls for cows from the back seat all the way home.

I managed to save the day by going to a local riding school where she saw some horses.

But I think that she must have got a bit confused, because yesterday we saw a horse and she said 'cow'...

//Car hate continues - the 'clutch' problem is back, so maybe it wasn't a clutch problem after all? I'm taking it back to the garage this evening to see what they say. If they don't do the honourable thing, I will kick up stink, write snotty letters and name and shame here. This is an official Ford dealership after all - and they charge 142F an hour!!!

Samedi passé on est allé visité le nouveau 'Military Megastore' qui vient de s'ouvrir à Bulle.

Pour la simple bonne raison qu'ils ont un avion de chasse en plein milieu du magasin !

J'étais tout content, et Kalia aussi, même si elle n'était pas 100% rassurée quand je l'ai mise dedans.

Last weekend we went the opening of a new 'Military Megastore' about half an hour away from here.

They just happen to have an old Russian fighter plane sitting there on the shop floor!

I was really happy to get up close, and so was Kalia, though not too happy about being sat in the cockpit - she got out pretty sharpish after I'd taken the photo!

This weekend, Pop & Grandma are with us - photos coming soon.

Cecilia

L'autre jour, Cécilia est venue avec sa mère, qui fait "l'école" en anglais avec Kalia. Elles aiment bien jouer ensemble les deux, et je les ai trouvé dans la chambre de Kalia en train de jouer à faire dodo.

The other day, Cecilia came with her Mum, who is Kalia english 'teacher'. They like playing together, and I found them in Kalia's bedroom playing at going to sleep.

Smile ... Sourire

Les bébés ne sont pas censés sourire avant trois semaines*, et si ça arrive c'est en fait des grimaces de digestion.

Sauf qu'on dirait que Rebecca digère à chaque fois qu'elle regarde le petit nounours sur la table à langer...

Babies aren't supposed to smile before they're three weeks old*, and if they do it's apparently just involuntary, indigestion-induced grimacing.

But Rebecca seems to do all her grimacing when she's looking at the little teddy on the nappy changing table.

Happy Daddy

Je me rappelle que lors de mes 16 ans, je suis arrivé tout de go chez des amis en annonçant que maintenant j'avais le droit de faire des enfants. Je me dis que je suis peut-être né avec l'instinct paternel.

Malheureusement, je suis aussi né avec le besoin de dormir, donc ça limite tout de suite.

Mais deux filles, c'est déjà une joie immense, un défi aussi, mais que je suis fier d'elles !

Et de Madame, qui n'y est pas pour rien.

I remember on my 16th birthday waltzing into a friend's house and announcing that I could now legally have children. I think I may have been born with paternal instinct.

Unfortunately, I was also born with the need to sleep, so that balances things out a bit.

But two daughters is already the bees knees as far as I'm concerned. I'm very proud of them!

And of Madame, who participated somewhat.

Vevey-sur-Mer

J'aime bien quand le vent lève un peu les vagues sur le Léman, et on peut imaginer quelques seconds qu'on est bord de la mer, et non pas 'enfermés' à l'intérieur du continent (un peu claustro, ce britannique !).

Les spécialistes observeront que cette photo était prise depuis la Tour-de-Peilz (à quelques mètres près).

Mais Vevey-sur-Mer sonne mieux.

I love it when the wind blows long enough to get the Leman a bit choppy, and I can pretend to myself that we are at the seaside - rather than being pretty severely landlocked (without the lake, this Brit would feel severely claustrophobic!).

The photo was actually taken from la Tour-de-Peilz, but La Tour-de-Peilz-sur-Mer just didn't have that ring.

(Tomorrow - back to work for the first time in three weeks!)

Samedi, nos chers amis et voisins Bernard et Lucy sont venus chercher Kalia pour l'amener peindre des oeufs de Pâques avec leurs petits enfants.

Elle est revenu toute fière avec son petit panier, trois oeufs et un poussin.

S'il y a plus de photos de Kalia que Rebecca sur ce blog, c'est parce que je passe la plupart de mon temps avec elle ces jours-ci. C'est très positif pour notre relation de passer ces semaines ensemble, et hier soir en la coiffant après le bain, je me suis dit "profite et enregistre ces moments, ça passera bien trop vite".

(Bien sûr, l'espoir demeure que le temps investi maintenant portera ces fruits plus tard. Mais le 'plus tard' peu parfois se faire attendre.)

Le retour au boulot lundi prochain va être difficile pour tout le monde, je crains...

On Saturday, our dear friends and neighbours Bernard and Lucy came and whisked off Kalia to paint Easter eggs with their grandchildren.

She came back a few hours later with a little basket with three eggs plus a chick!

There have been more photos here of Kalia than Rebecca recently, simply because I spend nearly all of my time with her at the moment. It's good for our relationship to spend these few weeks together. Yesterday evening, brushing her hair after the bath, I thought to myself "make the most of this, and store up the memories, it will be finished all too soon".

(Of course, there is always the hope that time invested now will bear it's fruit in years to come. But the 'years to come' some times take a while coming, from what I'm told).

Going back to work on Monday will be hard for all of us, I fear.
