Enzo

La semaine passée, j'ai tenté une expérience - j'ai envoyé des sms pour inviter 9 familles différentes (ayant tous des enfants plus ou moins de l'âge de Kalia) à venir faire un piquenique ensemble au bord du lac. C'était 'sans inscription'. On a eu qu'une famille et demi qui sont venu, mais on a passé une chouette moment ensemble avec nos amis Franck et Florence - qu'on a connu aux cours de préparation à l'accouchement il y a bientôt 5 ans. Kalia et Enzo ont joué ensemble pendant 3 heures non stop, sans se disputer !

Last week, I initiated something in a not-very-swiss way. I sent off texts inviting 9 other families (who all have kids about Kalia's age) to come for a picnic by the lake. Bring your own do, meaning people didn't have to give an answer, or decide in advance. We only had one family (and a half) turn up, but it spent a really nice afternoon with Franck & Florence - who we met nearly 5 years ago at the birth preparation classes! Kalia and Enzo played 3 hours non-stop, without arguing or fighting!

Family time ... Temps pour nous

Pendant les vacances, on s'est pris un dimanche pour aller marcher au bord du lac - de Clarens à Montreux, avec des glaces Movenpick pour motiver les troupes !

Après, de retour à la maison, on est encore ressorti au bord du lac pour pouvoir aller faire une petite trempette !

During the holidays, we took a Sunday 'off' to go for a walk along the edge of the lake at Montreux, with some nice ice creams to keep us going!

Once we got back home, we went back out again to the edge of 'our' bit of lake, for a little paddle/swim.

J'ai connu Pierrick il y a fort fort longtemps. On s'est tout de suite très bien entendu. Célibataire, on se voyait assez souvent. Avec le temps, et la distance, le travail, les mariages et les enfants, on se voit moins, mais on a eu un plaisir immense de partager quelques soirées avec eux pendant nos 'vacances' (ils ont pu être en vacances chez nous, puisque nous étions ailleurs).

On a aussi pu faire la connaissance de la petite Romane.

I met Pierrick many moons ago. We hit it off immediately. Back in the days when we were single, we often crossed the channel for a weekend to see each other. With time, and distance, and work, and marriage, and children, we see each other a lot less often. So we were overjoyed to spend a few evenings together with them (they were on holiday in our flat while we were 'away').

We also got to meet Romane for the first time.

Bedtime story ... Histoire

Ce n'est pas souvent qu'on y arrive (sinon on n'aurait même pas pensé à prendre en photo), mais de temps en temps les deux arrive à suivre la même histoire en même temps.

It doesn't often happen (otherwise we wouldn't have thought it worth photographing), but sometimes both of them manage to listen to the same story at the same time.

Not so bad ... pas si mal

Lundi matin, "Je veux pas aller à l'école, j'ai peur" - mais pour finir le fait d'être allé toute la famille ensemble, c'était bénéfique, elle s'est mis à jouer avec les autres enfants.

Mardi matin, elle était beaucoup plus d'attaque, elle a eu un petit moment de lutte interne quand d'autres enfants ont commencé à pleurer, mais elle tenu bon, et on est très fier d'elle !

C'est fini la petite fille ! La ligne droite vers l'indépendence est entamé...

Monday morning: "I don't want to go to school, I'm scared" - but in the end, as we all went together, it was ok, and she was soon playing with the other children.

Tuesday morning, she was up and ready. She had to fight back some tears when several other children started crying, but she managed, and we're very proud of her!

So that's the little girl finished. Now it's just straight on all the way to independence!

School ... Ecole

Juste avant de partir en vacances, on a été en famille prendre notre petit déjeuner dans un tea room sympa à Blonay. Après on a joué un moment à la place de jeu en dessous du château.

J'ai discuté avec une maman anglaise, qui était en vacances avec sa fille. Puis avec un papa allemand, qui venait d'eménager avec sa famille juste à côté. Kalia s'est amusé avec ses filles pendant ce temps. C'est ça que j'aime ici, le fait qu'on rencontre des personnes d'un peu partout, au hazard d'une balançoire.

Mais c'est pas de ça que je voulais parler.

Demain matin j'ai pris congé, parce que c'est le premier jour d'école pour Kalia. Comme c'est souvent le cas, je crois que ça va être plus dur pour nous que pour elle ! Elle a la bonne personalité, elle adore être avec d'autres enfants. Puis par un heureux concours de circonstances (qui pourrait commencer avec un m, si vous voulez), on connaît déjà sa classe et sa maîtresse. L'année passée elle a fait des "cours d'initiation musicale", et la dame qui lui donnait les cours s'avèrait être maîtresse d'école, et nous a proposé de prendre Kalia dans sa classe. C'était un grand soulagement, je me faisais des soucis par rapport au langage de Kalia, mais vu que cette dame la connaît déjà, ça signifie qu'elle la prend en connaissance de cause.

En fait, demain c'est juste une heure de séance d'information avec les parents - je suppose histoire de les liquider pour pouvoir vraiment faire de l'école mardi matin !

Enfin, je suis aussi content que ce n'est pas moi qui doit recommencer l'école !

Before going off on 'holiday', we went out for breakfast to a very nice tea room in Blonay. Then spent a while in the play area just below the castle there.

I had a little chat with an English mum who was there with her little girl. Then a German chap who had just moved in with his family. Meanwhile Kalia had fun playing with their children, in various languages. That's one of the things I love about this place, is you meet all sorts of people, just by chance in the play area.

But that's not today's subject.

I've taken tomorrow morning off work because it's Kalia first day at school. As is often the case, I suspect that it will be more difficult for us that for her! She's very outgoing and sociable, and loves being round other kids. And by a happy coincidence (which might start with an m), we already know which class she will be in, and who her teacher will be. Last year she did a 'introduction to music' class, and the lady who gave the class turned out to be an infants teacher, and she actually asked us whether we'd like Kalia to be in her class. I was quite worried about how Kalia was going to get along with her teacher, because she's still not always easy to understand, so it's very reassuring for me (at least) to know that she is with a teacher who has 'chosen' her.

Actually, tomorrow is just a one hour 'briefing' session for the parents with their kids - probably to get us off their backs so that Tuesday they can actually do some real school!

I'm just glad it's not me who has to go back to school!

Kalia and Mummy

Un jour pendant les vacances, Kalia et Mamma sont parti ensemble pour faire le petit tour en 'train' touristique qui va entre Chexbres et Saint-Saphorin. Elles ont rencontré une dame japonaise avec qui elles ont sympathisé, et qui a pris cette photo.

One day during our holiday, Kalia and Mamma went off together for a tour on the little "train" that goes through the vineyards between Chexbres and Saint-Saphorin. They met a friendly Japanese lady who they chatted with, and who took this photo.

Je viens de lire un article (in English) qui explique que la majorité des messages echangés sur Twitter n'ont aucune valeur.

Pas vraiment une surprise, c'est bien pour ça que j'ai arrêté.

Il y a quelques semaines, il y avait un marché avec des bonbons anglais, ce fut comme la madeleine de Proust pour moi, j'allais toutes les semaines au petit magasin du coin pour acheter mes 10 pence de bonbons dans un petit sac en papier!

A few weeks back, there was an stall at the local supermarket marked 'Tuck box', where they were selling English specialities, and sweets!

Took me back to days of yore when I used to go and get me 10p's worth at the newsagents (about here), in a little paper bag.

Got more for your money in those days.

Now racking my brains to try and remember what they are all called, so from back left to front right:

10 years today ... 10 ans aujourd'hui

ben oui, c'était nos 10 ans de mariage aujourd'hui.

J'ai pris congé, et grâce à la générosité de plusieurs amis, on a pu 'casé' les filles, et aller se régaler au restaurant avec vue sur le Léman.

Buffet d'antipasti

Buffet de desserts
Champagne
Blanc et rouge de Chardonne.
Terminé avec un bon café dégusté tranquillement comme il se doit.

(Seul ceux qui ont encore des petits enfants peuvent apprécier tout le poids de la dernière phrase !)

Après on a retrouvé nos princesses en pleine forme. Kalia restera même pour la nuit chez les copines.

Que dire de 10 ans de vie conjugale ? (A part "quoi, déjà ?!")

On a vécu des temps faciles et moins faciles, même durs parfois. On a eu des joies, et des peines.
On a grandi. Et c'est le plus important, je crois.

Alors je repique pour encore 10.

Yup, 10th wedding anniversary today.

I took the day off work, and thanks to some kind friends, we were able to offload our offsprung and go and live it up at a posh restaurant with a view of the lake.

Buffet 'antipasti'
Main course, spicy thai beef
Buffet of desserts
Champagne
Local white and red wine.
Rounded off appropriately with a nice coffee, sipped unhurriedly with due respect.

(Only parents with young children will properly understand the significance of that last sentence)

And afterwards we returned to our two princesses, who were having a whale of a time. Kalai is even staying for the night.

What can I say about 10 years of married life (Apart from, "what, already?!")

We've had our highs and our lows, and some really tough times. Joys and sadness.
But we've grown, and grown together, which is most important thing, I think.

So I'm up for another 10.

Back ... de retour

Désolé, on a été 'en vacances' pendant 2 semaines.

Des amis nous ont prêté leur maison pendant qu'ils étaient partis.

J'allais quand même au boulot, mais c'était cool de changer d'endroit, et d'avoir le jardin de plein pied.

Et les vaches au fond du jardin.

J'ai beaucoup de photos à vous montrer, il faudra juste prendre le temps.

Sorry, we were on 'holiday' for two weeks.

Some friends lent us their house while they were away.

I continued to go to work, but a change is as good as a rest, and it was nice to have a garden.

And cows in the field at the end of the garden.
