Hot stuff ... C'est chaud!

(Voilà une photo de Kalia qui joue au bord du lac, devenu passage obligé dans nos petits promenades du soir.).

Ce week-end il fait chaud - très chaud. Et cette semaine au travail il a fait chaud aussi - au point où on transpirait. Comme d'habitude dans ces circonstances-là, l'air conditionné ne marchait pas.

C'est un peu effrayant - c'est le mois d'avril (un mois avec R!), et on met déjà la climatisation dans la voiture, les stores au balcon, et je dois courir m'acheter des lunettes de soleil (quelque chose que je fais chaque année, sauf que cette fois-ci, pour changer, je ne les ai pas perdues: c'est ma fille qui les a 'ajusté').

Tout le monde se pose la même question :

Mais qu'est-ce que ça va être au mois de juillet ?!

This weekend it's hot here - very hot. And this week at work it was hot too - we were sweating on Thursday. As usual, the air conditioning wasn't working just when we needed it.

It's a bit scary - this is April after all - it's supposed to be chilly still, and we're already using the air conditioning in the car, pulling down the blinds during day time, and I have to go and buy some sun glasses (this is something I do every year, but this year for a change I didn't lose them: my daughter 'fixed' them).

Everyone is asking the same question:

What's it going to be like in July?

Perci

Ces derniers jours, Kalia a commencé à dire merci, tout d'un coup. La prononciation n'est pas encore tout à fait ça, mais elle a vraiment bien compris quand c'est que ça s'utilise. C'est drôle quand tu ouvres une porte et un petit bout de chou de 26 mois te dit 'merci' (enfin, 'perci').

These last few days, Kalia has suddenly started saying 'perci' (which, for the uninitiated, means thank you). Apart from the vague disappointment of it not coming out in English (though we have one point up on that front with 'apple'), it's quite amazing that she has understood what it means, or at least in what context to use it. It's quite strange having a little 26-month old not-quite-baby say 'thankyou' when you open a door or pass her something!

Techno

D'aucuns ont exprimé des réserves par rapport à mon inclusion d'articles un peu techniques dans ce blog. Ce qui est intéressant est dans mes statistiques de fréquentation, c'est que la majorité de personnes qui tombent sur ce blog 'par hazard', le font en cherchant la solution à un problème bien précise.

Ca ne prouve rien, mais ça m'encourage à continuer.

Interesting to note that despite my multiple apologies for including technical stuff on this blog, the search statistics show that the majority of 'chance' visits to this site are from people looking for a solution to a technial problem.

Which doesn't got to show anything at all, but it encourages me to carry on.

New car seat ... siège auto

Grâce à l'utilisation assidue de la carte Coop par Madame, on a eu droit à un nouveau siège pour enfant avec les points...

Kalia l'a adopté de sitôt, et n'a même pas voulu attendre que ce soit installé dans la voiture...

Kalia has a new car seat - as you can see, she couldn't wait for it to be put in the car!

The best bit (for spendthrift fathers) is that thanks to Mamma's regular use of the Coop store card, we bought it entirely with points.

Fed up with stuff ... dégout des choses

L'autre jour en me promenant au rayon 'jouets pour grands garçons' j'ai été saisi tout d'un coup par le dégout des choses. Entouré par les écrans plats de la taille d'une table de salle à manger, je me suis rendu compte tout d'un coup de la pression incessante que le marketing exerce sur nous à longueur de mois.

"Tu seras heureux, tu seras mieux, tu sera bien, ta vie changera du tout au tout, si seulement tu achètes encore le x, y ou z dernier cri."

Ras-le-bol.

Ras-le-bol d'être manipulé, ras-le-bol de tomber dans le panier, ras-le-bol d'être réduit à une chose qui achète des choses. J'aimerais vivre libre, garder cette clairvoyance qui voit droit à travers toute cette fumée, et qui ne perd pas de vue le fait que non seulement l'essentiel est invisible aux yeux, mais aussi que ça ne s'achète pas dans un supermarché...

The other day, walking throught the 'toys for big boys' section of the department store in town, I realised that I am fed up with stuff. Surrounded by flat panel tv screens which could seat 8 for dinner if laid flat, I was suddenly conscious of the incessant pounding of marketing that hammers this stuff into us month after month.

"You will be happy, you will feel good, you will feel better, your life will be transformed, just as long as you buy this x, y or z".

Fed up.

Fed up with being manipulated, fed up with falling for their tricks, fed up with being reduced to an object that buys objects. I want to be free, to maintain this passing moment of clairvoyance - continue to see through their smoke screens and remember the most important things in life can't be bought.

Windôze

Quand Windows XP est sorti, je l'ai baptisé Windows 'Walt Disney' - il me semblait que la seule 'valeur' ajoutée était que les icônes était un peu plus sympa.

J'ai pu installé et regarder Windows Vista (BOF!) sur un ordinateur de test au travail. Je pense que je l'appellerai Windows 'Pixar' ! Sûrement qu'il y a plein de bonnes choses sous le capot, mais pour travailler, je ne vois pas d'avantage. C'est un truc qui va bouffer toutes les ressources de votre ordinateur, juste pour être plus joli...

Bien sûr, il y a un petit jeu ici entre les constructeurs d'ordinateur, et Microsoft. Microsoft compte sur la vente d'ordinateurs pour vendre Vista (sans quoi, ils auraient de la peine - d'où toute la publicité 'wow'), et les constructeurs d'ordinateur compte sur Microsoft pour concevoir un système qui aura besoin d'un nouvel ordinateur beaucoup plus puissant pour faire exactement la même chose qu'avant.

C'est affligeant je trouve. J'ai entendu (de quelqu'un de Microsoft!) qu'il y a des bitmaps (images) dans Windows Vista qui prennent plus de place que tout Windows 3.1.

Pour quand un ordinateur qui fait juste des trucs simples, mais très vite? Ou modérément vite?

Je reste convaincu que la vraie révolution informatique ne sera pas la lookologie. La vraie révolution informatique va être aussi grande que l'invention de la souris et des 'fenêtres'.

C'est tout le sujet des 'interactions homme-machine' (n'en plaise au dames). Ca m'intéresse beaucoup - si quelqu'un veut m'embaucher pour réfléchir là-dessus à plein temps, je suis preneur !

When Windows XP came out I nicknamed it Windows 'Walt Disney'. All it had extra compared to Windows 2000 was cuddly icons.

Having installed Windows Vista on a test machine at work, I think we can nickname it Windows 'Pixar'. Lots of eye-candy. And probably lots of clever things under the hood - but you still need a computer twice as powerful to do the same things (slowly).

Of course this is how the computer manufacturers and Microsoft play with us - each counting on the other to push 'progress' forwards and make us buy new computers so that we can buy new software to do the same thing we did before...

I watched an interview with a Microsoft guy the other day who said there were bitmaps in Vista which take up more diskspace than the whole of Windows 3.1!

I'm convinced that the real computer revolution is yet to come, and it will be more than eye-candy. It will be as big as the change from command-line to point-and-click.

It's all about human-machine interaction, which I find really interesting - if anyone out there wants to pay me to think about this stuff, yes please!

Rien d'extraordinaire à raconter, en tout cas pas de quoi raconter dans le peu de temps à disposition avant que Kalia (sur mes genoux) perd intérêt au 'jeu' à l'ordinateur.

Scripting Games

Je me suis amusé à jouer au 'scripting games' du site Microsoft. C'est très light, et le prix convoité est d'avoir son nom sur un site Microsoft ! Je me suis essayé au Powershell en Beginners, mais j'ai loupé, donc j'aurais pas touts les points nécessaires (voir ici). Mais je suis encore dans le bon pour le VBScript - les derniers deux concours n'ont pas encore été noté, mais je suis quasi-sur d'avoir tout bon (scores ici).
Hihihi, je pourrais mettre ça sur mon CV !

Si jamais vous êtes un vrai technard, je vous conseil vivement de vous intéressez à Linq, c'est la révolution (à mon avis). Je suis tombé aujourd'hui sur une vidéo avec Anders Hejlsberg qui explique comment tout ça se goupille. Vous ne reconnaissez peut-être pas ce nom, mais c'est un BIG gourou parmi les gourous.

I discovered the Microsoft scripting games two weeks ago, thought I'd give it a bite - they're very laid back up there, and the sparkly prize is having your bio on a Microsoft web site!

I entered on Powershell beginners, but messed up on two events, so I'm no longer in the running (scores here).

But I still have a good chance in the VBScript advanced stream (scores here). There are still two events which they haven't marked yet, but I'm pretty much certain I got them right. Just imagine, I'll be able to put the link to the page on my CV!

If you are a techno-waller, I strongly encourage you to get interested in Linq - it's the next BIG thing. I came across a vidéo today, with Anders Hejlsberg explaining how all the bits fit together. You may not of heard of him, but he's the kind of guru that makes Bill Gates look like a script kiddy!

Voilà la photo qui devait apparaître la dernière fois. J'en suis assez content. Elle est prise à un angle bizarre parceque je devais poser l'appareil pour éviter le flou - et la boîte sur laquelle j'ai posé l'appareil était de travers.

Paris Hilton

Désolé, je n'ai pas pu resister à la tentation de cette petite blague. Pendant mon séjour à Paris, je suis allé me promené un soir dans le quartier au tour de l'Arc de Triomphe, et suis tombé sur l'hôtel Hilton à Paris. Ceux qui ne voient pas ce qui est drôle peuvent se renseigner avec Google...

Les TechDays étaient très intéressants - j'ai appris beaucoup de choses - j'étais ébahi et effrayé par le volume de nouveautés que Microsoft arrive à sortir. Et également effrayé par toutes les choses qu'il faudrait apprendre pour se mettre à la page.

Et d'autant plus frustré en rentrant dans la 'vraie vie' au boulot jeudi, de devoir continuer à travailler avec "l'ancienne" technologie. (En l'occurrence, l'ancienne technologie n'a même pas 10 ans...)

Pour ceux qui vous concerne, j'ai pris pas mal de photos, donc il y aura de quoi meubler ici.

Sorry, I couldn't resist this little 'in' joke. I went out for a walk one evening during my stay in Paris, and came across the Hilton hotel. I thought it was quite funny. If you haven't got the faintest idea why - try Google...

The TechDays were very interesting, I came away amazed by the quantity of new stuff the Microsoft is capable of producing. And horrified by how much I have to learn if I want to catch up.

It makes returning to the grindstone that much difficult, when you know that you're working on 'obsolete' technology (that is, ten years old...)

I'll probably end up posting about some of the technical stuff, but I also took quite a few photos, so that should help to keep this blog going.

TechDays

Malgré le titre de cet article, ce n'est pas du technique, promis.

C'est que dimanche soir je pars à Paris pour trois jours pour suivre les 'TechDays' de Microsoft. C'est un "grand truc", me disent ceux qui savent plus que moi sur le sujet.

Pas féru de grandes foules, ni trop sûr de mes capacités d'absorption de nouveautés non-stop pendant trois jours, j'y vais avec autant de frilosité que de frissons.

D'autant plus que trois jours loin de ma petite famille (plutôt 4 pour Kalia puisque je pars et retourne pendant qu'elle dort), ça fait beaucoup.

Et que des chambres d'hôtel j'en ai tellement eu ma dose à Liège (pendant 6 mois dans une vie précédente), que ça me fait pas franchement crier de joie...

Par contre, je me réjouis de prendre à nouveau le TGV. De revoir Paris, en diagonal surement. D'apprendre des choses nouvelles. De prendre un coup de pouce (pied) technique pour ne plus avoir l'impression d'être totalement largué (Windows Vista, je ne l'ai même pas vu encore !)

A bientôt pour plus - ça se trouve qu'il y aura des bornes internet là-bas, je vous ferais un reportage!

Not a technical post, despite the title.

I'm off to the Microsoft TechDays in Paris on Sunday, for three days. It's a 'big' deal, from what my better-informed (but less-fortunate) colleagues tell me.

Not a great lover of big crowds, and none to sure of my ability to absorb three full days of completely new stuff, I'm half way between excited and worried.

And spending three days (more like four for Kalia, as I leave and get back while she's sleeping) away from my little family is going to be tough too.

And I had my fill of hotel rooms in a previous life (for 6 months in Liege)

But I'm quite looking forward to taking the TGV again. Having a short peek at Paris. And getting a technical foot up so that I don't feel quite so behind the times - I mean, at least I'll get to see what Windows Vista looks like at last!

Might even come away with a free pen!

Detect bad encoding javascript html utf-8t

(Encore du technique, merci pour votre patience).

Problem: you have a page that has accented characters, that is supposed to be opening in utf-8 charset encoding, but sometimes doesn't (maybe I'm the only person that ever had this problem..., in my case it was the HTML editor Xinha, opened in a popup).

How to at least warn your users that there is a problem? Can javascript detect the encoding of the page in which it is placed?

Well, no, and yes.

This is the solution I found, which is rather elegant (I feel):
if ('é'.length==2) alert('Houston, we have a problem');

How does it work?

I may be wrong, but as I understand it, 'normal' text takes up one byte per character. Unicode takes up two bytes per character. UTF-8 takes up one byte, except for 'problem' characters, for which it users two bytes.

So if a utf-8 encoded page is badly intepreted as being 'normal', an 'é' character (which takes up two bytes), will be interpreted as two one-byte characters.

Conversely, if the browser thinks the page is utf-8, it will interpret the 'é' combination as one character.

So if javascript tells you the length is two, you know that you're not in UTF-8.

(Last detail, and here I'm in unknown territory - contrary to the postscript in my previous post about utf-8, you shouldn't save web pages as UTF-8, but normal files, but with the charset meta tag set tu utf-8. I think I'm right about that, but no idea why...)

Dire rear ... Vidange

C'est pas la top forme chez nous ces jours - Kalia est malade depuis la fin de la semaine passée, et j'étais à la maison aujourd'hui complètement KO et en train de faire un purge involontaire.

Pour l'instant, Mamma n'a pas succombé, et tant mieux, deux malades à la fois c'est déjà assez !

Not on the top of our form here right now. Kalia's beek 'ick since last week, and I was off work today with fever, dia...wotsit etc..

Fortunately, Mamma isn't ill yet - hope it stays that way - two at a time is already plenty!

Before & after ... Avant & Après

Ils sont venus enlever la vieille moquette et remettre en état le parquet qui était en dessous. Seulement que lorsqu'ils ont enlevé la moquette, ils ont découvert pourquoi elle avait été mise - un gros bout de parquet manquant était remplacé par une planche de contre-plaqué.

Du coup ils ont du poser du laminé par dessus.

Mais ce n'est pas plus mal, c'est plus clair.

Last week the chappy came to rip up the old carpet in the hall and do up the parquet whic was underneath. But when he took the carpet up, he discovered the reason why they put it there - there was a large chunk of parquet missing - replaced with some plywood.

So in the end they covered it over with another layer of pre-fabricated parquet.

It's lighter than the other parquet would have been, so we're quite pleased - now just got to do up all the paintwork and put the furniture back!
