Voilà une photo de Grandma, Kalia et Pop qui regardent ensemble la vidéo préférée de Kalia (Baby Shakespeare).

Kalia s'est vraiment bien entendu avec ses grandparents - au point où quand on est rentré de chez la pédiatre après avoir fait son vaccin, elle a fondu en larmes et s'est jeté dans les bras de mon père pour se faire consoler !

//Hier soir j'ai eu au téléphone une dame que je n'ai pas vu depuis plus de 7 ans. Elle logait à moins d'un kilomètre de chez nous, mais par un concours de circonstances je ne l'ai su qu'à la veille de son départ, et on n'a pas pu se revoir.

Dommage.

She got on really well with her grandparents - and she made us laugh on Friday when we got back from the doctors where she'd had a jab. She burst into tears and ran into her Pop's arms for consolation!

//Yesterday evening, I had a chat on the phone to someone who I hadn't met in more than 7 years. She was staying pretty much round the corner from where we live, but due to a mix-up with email addresses and the like, I didn't know about it till just before she was leaving, and we couldn't find a time to see each other.

Shame.

Fuel economy ... Que de choses

Mes excuses, ça a fait un peu long.

Mes parents viennent de repartir en Angleterre (enfin, à l'heure qu'il est, ils doivent être en train d'arriver chez eux) après 5 jours chez nous - y compris un week-end à Zurich. C'était un peu l'aventure pour tout le monde, mais on a eu beaucoup de plaisir, et Kalia a appris qui sont 'Pop' et 'Grandma'. Elle nous a fait rire parce qu'à plusieurs reprises lors de gros chagrins, c'est dans leurs bras qu'elle est allé se réfugier !

Le voyage à Zurich était encore une occasion de tester la consommation de la nouvelle voiture - et aussi d'expérimenter la joie des bouchons made in suisse... Si jamais vous prenez la tronçon entre Berne et Zurich - prenez-le peut-être à 3h du matin. En tout cas, pour le retour - même un dimanche à midi - on a eu droit à une heure de bouchon.

Sorry, lots of stuff on recently.

My parents have just left for home (well, they're probably arriving now) after five days here - including a weekend in Zurich. It was quite an adventure for all involved, but we had a good time, and Kalia learnt who Pop and Grandma are. She made us laugh several times when she ran into their arms to be consoled when she cried!

The trip to Zurich gave me another chance to test the fuel economy counter on the new car - and also genuine swiss traffic jams. We managed to get stuck in one in both directions. The one on the way back must have lasted about an hour. The worst thing was that at the end of it, there was no indication of why there had been a jam in the first place!

Back to the grindstone tomorrow (bank holiday here today). Ho-hum.

Cristel & Flora

Voilà, finalement c'était assez simple de revenir en arrière, le look du site est restoré, et je ne vais plus jouer avec pendant un bon moment !

Sur la photo, Cristel et Flora, sa fille. C'est l'amie de longue date que je suis allé visiter avec Kalia pendant qu'on était à Nîmes. C'était très chouette de revoir Cristel, de connaître son mari, et aussi sa fille, qui - comme vous pouvez constater par vous-mêmes - est très mignonne !

Well, I managed to get things back to the way they were. It wasn't that complicated in the end, just had to find the right buttons to click. I won't be messing around with that again in a long while, I think.

The photo is of Cristel and her daughter Flora. It's the friend from 'way back when' who I went to see with Kalia when we were in the South of France a few weeks back. It was great to see Cristel again and to meet her husband and Flora, who as you can see is a very cute little girl (and - like Kalia - big for her age, she's only 6 !).

The three i's ... les trois i

C'est un mur que j'ai pris en photo à Nîmes, il y en a beaucoup dans ce style là-bas. Je l'ai trouvé très joli - j'en ferais presqu'un fond d'écran.

Dans un moment d'inspiration, j'avais noté quelques sujets pour nourrir ce blog. Ce qui est effrayant est de voir qu'une, deux semaines plus tard, des choses que je trouvais intéressantes me semblent maintenant soit banales, soit prétentieuses. C'est à se demander quelle doit être la qualité de tous les articles que j'écris directement !

Alors, du coup, je vous épargnerais mon cours en politique internationale...

Si vous vous posez quand même la question, les trois i ce sont les moteurs du terrorisme :

• Injustice
• Inégalité
• Idéologie

et la question à se poser est : que fait mon gouvernement pour les combattre ? Et qu'est-ce que je peux faire pour les combattre ?

This is a photo of a wall, which I took when we in Nîmes, there were quite a lot like this one. I think it's very pretty, it'd almost make a nice background for my desktop.

In an uncommon moment of inspiration, I jotted down a few ideas for future blogs. The scary thing is that coming back now, a few weeks later, the subjects either seem boring or pretentious. Which makes me wonder about the quality of the posts that I write straight away!

Anyway, you've thus narrowly escaped a rather long-winded essay on international politics. If you're still curious, the three i's are what I think are the motors of terrorism:

• Injustice
• Inequality
• Ideology

The question to ask oneself is, what is my government doing to fight them, and what can I do to fight them?

No more camera ... plus d'appareil

Cette semaine Kalia a reçu une petite tente déguisée en coccinelle. Puisqu'on avait vu qu'elle adorait se cacher sous la table de la salle à manger, ça semblait une bonne idée, et effectivement, elle s'amuse comme un folle.

Suite à mes plaintes au sujet de mon nouvel appareil numérique la semaine passée, mes parents ont très justement demandé pourquoi je ne le ramenerais pas au magasin. Du coup, c'est ce que j'ai fait, ce matin. J'ai pris quelques photos entre deux, de quoi nourrir (j'espère) ce blog pendant quelques temps.

Je pense que je vais procéder comme avec la voiture - rechercher, me renseigner, et surtout cette fois-ci essayer de trouver un appareil qui est rapide (Kalia ne disparaît pas pendant la prise), sensible à la lumière (n'utilise pas le flash pour toutes les photos à l'intérieur) et pas trop volumineux. Si ça fonctionne avec deux AA et carte SD et c'est pas trop cher, alors je serais content. Je cherche aussi un site qui inclue la rapidité des prises dans ses comparatifs. Alors toutes vos recommandations sont les bienvenues !

Mais j'ai intérêt à me dépécher, elle grandit tout le temps, ma fille !

This week, we bought Kalia a tent disguised as a ladybird. Seeing how much she enjoyed hiding under the dining-room table, we figured she love it. And she does.

Following my complaints about my new camera, my parents quite rightly wondered why I didn't take it back to the shop. So I did, this morning. I took a few more photos first, just to keep this blog topped up.

This time I think I'm going to do what I did for the car - take the time to research properly, compare etc. All I want is a camera that is fast enough to catch Kalia before she scuttles off, light-sensitive enough to not always need a flash on indoor photos, compact. If it works with two AA batteries and an SD card and it's not too expensive, I'll be a happy bunny. I'm looking for a site which includes camera speed in its comparisons. So if you have any advice, please let me know!

And I need to move fast - Kalia is growing all the time.

La Passerelle

Voilà, au bout de mois de travail, d'attentes etc, la Passerelle s'affiche comme telle. Je trouve que c'est assez joli. Le site a un petit peu évolué aussi, mais pas des masses. Toujours pas le temps pour avancer comme je voudrais. (www.lapasserelle.ch).

After months of work and lots of patience, La Passerelle at last has the right name on the outside (up 'til now we still had the name of the previous owner). I think it's quite pretty. The site has changed a little bit too, though not as much as I would like. Never enough time to implement all the ideas we have. (www.lapasserelle.ch).

Nîmes

On a passé quelques jours au sud de la France à Nîmes, où Madame assistait à "l'université d'été de la relation d'aide", et monsieur s'occupait de sa fille.

J'ai aussi eu l'occasion d'aller visiter une amie que je n'avais pas vu depuis 14 ans ! Ca ne fait pas tout à fait la moitié d'une vie (en tout cas, pas la mienne), mais c'en est pas bien loin. C'était très sympa, je mettrai des photo ici à l'occase.

En plus, il a fait beau, contrairement au temps qu'il fait ici, on se croirait déjà au mois de novembre !

J'ai réussi à faire 5 litres au cent avec la voiture. Par contre, l'appareil photo continue d'être lent et un peu décevant. N'achetez surtout pas un Nikon Coolpix L2...

We spent a few days in the South of France, at Nimes. Madame was at a counselling conference, and I looked after little Miss.

I was also able to go and visit a friend that I hadn't seen in 14 years - which is almost, but not quite, half my life ago! It was very pleasant, and I'll post some photos here at a later date.

It was nice weather too. Not like here, where you'd think it was already November!

I managed to get about 56.5 to the gallon out of the car, which is pretty good. But the camera is slow and disappointing. Whatever you do, don't buy a Nikon Coolpix L2!

Too late ... trop tard

J'ai commencé cet article hier soir, c'était trop tard pour écrire grand chose.

C'était aussi pour annoncé que je me suis acheté un Nikon CoolPix L2 - 6 megapixel, 3x zoom etc.

C'est nul.

J'ai été trop gaté par mon Konica Minolta DImage X2 avec 2 megapixel, mais qui était nettement plus petit, plus rapide, plus malin, et moins cher !

Celui-ci met plusieurs seconds à s'en remettre à chaque fois qu'il utilise le flash. Et semble en avoir plus souvent besoin.

Tu ne peux même pas lui dire de stocker tes photos dans un répertoire par jour avec la date comme nom de répertoire. La technologie recule je vous dit.

This is just to announce that I've bought a Nikon CoolPix L2 - 6 megapixels,3x zoom etc.

It's rubbish.

I must be spoilt by the old Konica Minolta DImage X20, but it was smaller, faster, smarter and cheaper!

This one takes several seconds to recover every time you use the flash, and it seems to use it quite often. And you can't even set it up to save your photos in a different folder per day.

Progress is going backwards...

Pas de panique à bord, il ne s'agit pas de la fin du blog (bien que... est-ce que quelqu'un remarquerait ?), mais de la vidéo de Kalia.

Mes parents lui ont offert 'Baby Shakespeare' à Noël, et c'est seulement cette dernière semaine qu'elle a vraiment commencé à s'y intéresser et à regarder d'un bout à l'autre. Seulement voilà que quand ça arrive à la fin, elle pleure comme une Madeleine !

C'est assez 'drôle', on aimerait tellement savoir ce qui se passe dans sa petite tête. Une autre chose drôle c'est que si elle nous voit en video, elle pleure aussi.

A part ça, la photo est de notre premier tentatif de faire des grillades chez nous sur le balcon. Etant donné qu'il pleuvait, il n'y avait pas grand risque de déranger les voisins. C'est juste après cette photo que j'ai sorti le sèche-cheveux (un autre avantage de faire à la maison)

My parents gave her 'Baby Shakespeare' for Christmas, and it's just in the last few weeks that she's really started to be interested and watch it all the way through. The only thing is that when it gets to the end she bursts into tears!

It's quite strange, no idea what's going on in her head. Another funny thing is if she sees a video of us (or even of herself), she cries her eyes out too.

The photo is of our first attempt at having a barbecue on the balcony. As it was raining there wasn't too much worries about bothering the neighbours on the floor above. I got the hair-dryer out just after this photo (another advantage of doing the barbecue at home).

C'est Christian qui m'a envoyé l'annonce pour le Ford Focus.
C'est lui qui est venu avec moi pour la voir la première fois.
C'est lui qui nous a prêté sa voiture pour aller chercher la carte grise.
C'est aussi lui qui m'a amené pour aller chercher la voiture.
Et c'est même lui qui m'a prêté l'appareil pour faire ces photos...

Donc vous comprenez pourquoi c'est vraiment l'homme du mois !

This is Christian.

He was the one who sent me the advert for the Ford Focus.
He came with me to check it out.
He lent us his car so we could go and get the paperwork sorted.
He drove me to go and pick it up.
He even lent me his camera so I could take these photos.

So you understand why he's Man of the month!

Haircut ... coiffeur

Kalia a eu son deuxième coupe de cheveux la semaine passée.

Comme la première, c'est Daddy qui a fait le coiffeur, et qui lui a coupé la frange, debout dans la baignoire après la douche.

Je ne sais pas si c'est réussi ou non, mais elle est très sage et ne bouge pas du tout.

La petite nouvelle que je vous annoncais hier ?

On a à nouveau une voiture, c'est une Ford Focus Ghia 1.8 TDCi, 115CV, de 2003 avec 84,000 km. On l'a eu pour 12,200 CHF, ce qui est une bonne affaire, à condition qu'il n'y ait pas de défaut caché. Mais on est paré à toute éventualité, puisque grâce à l'insistance de Madame, on a réussi à convaincre le vendeur de reprendre la voiture dans les 7 jours si on trouvait un défaut majeur au contrôle TCS.

Et puis si vous vous demandiez comment ça se fait qu'il y a à nouveau des photos sur le blog... revenez plus tard et je vous dirai tout.

Kalia had her second haircut ever last week.

Like the first time, it was Daddy doing the honours - with her standing in the bath after her shower.

I don't know if it's a success or not, but in any case she's very good about it and stands dead still. Mind you, I did just trim the fringe, so it didn't take that long.

The news I told you about yesterday is that we now have a car. It's a Ford Focus Ghia 1.8 TDCi, 115 HP, from 2003 with 50 thousand miles on the clock. It's the old model, but that shouldn't matter too much. We paid 12'200 francs which is a pretty good deal to be honest, as long as it doesn't turn out to be a problem car. However, we should be covered for that too, as thanks to Madame's persistence, we managed to persuade the guy selling it to give us a week to get it checked professionnally, and to reimburse us if anything big and nasty turns up.

Oh, and if you're wondering how come there are suddenly photos again - come back later!

Sweet rain ... douce pluie

Voilà le puzzle que Kalia a appris à faire le week-end passé. Elle était très fière, et tout le monde devait applaudir à chaque pièce mise !

Ici il pleut depuis 2 ou 3 jours, une pluie qui tombe sûrement mal pour ceux qui ont choisi ces jours pour être en vacanes, mais la terre en avait besoin. C'est une pluie qui me rappelle plutôt la Bretagne ou l'Irlande. Une pluie qui tombe doucement en toute petites gouttes, mais qui trempe rapidement jusqu'au os.

Demain (si j'ai le temps), j'aurais peut-être une petite nouvelle à vous annoncer.

This is the jigsaw that Kalia learnt how to do last week. She was very proud of her accomplishment, and everyone had to clap for each piece she got right!

It's been raining here now for a few days, bad news for those who on holiday at the moment, but good news for the plants and trees. It's rain that reminds me of Brittany or Ireland - the kind of innocent-looking small drops which fall steadily and persistently for hours on end and soak you to the bone.

If I have time, I may have a little bit of news for you tomorrow.

18 months ... 18 mois

Incroyable mais vrai, Kalia a 18 mois aujourd'hui.

On dit facilement 'oh la la que ça passe vite', mais en réflechissant je me demande si c'est vrai. Ce matin nous avons eu un appel d'amis qui sont nouveaux parents, dont le bambin dort très peu et pleurt beaucoup. Ca me fait dire qu'il y a eu des périodes moins faciles qui ne se sont pas passées si vite que ça, tout compte fait.

Je regrette que pour l'occasion je n'aies pas de jolie photo à vous proposer, je n'ai toujours pas d'appareil.

En revanche, on aura peut-être bientôt une voiture...

Believe it or not, Kalia is 18 months old today.

People tend to say "doesn't time pass quickly", but I wonder if it's that true. This morning I had a phone call from friends who have just had their first baby - who cries lots and sleeps little. Which reminded me that there were certain difficult phases which didn't go as quick as all that.

I'm sorry I don't have a photo to show you, but I've still not got a replacement camera unfortunately.

But we may soon have a car...
