Things about the UK …

The return trip went well. I had to leave before the end to catch the plane, but I did get my ‘swag’ (a CodeKen t-shirt). I think I’d do it again, if they organise another one, it was just the right size, and I can now put faces to some virtual names. The flight with Swiss from London City was a bit more expensive than with EasyJet from Gatwick, but I think it was worth it to avoid the extra hour (or more) of public transport. And the fresh sandwiches and Swiss chocolate on board help too! I was also able to choose myself a place quite near the front of the plane, and on leaving, with a quick last sprint, I managed to squeeze onto the train just before the doors shut and it left. So zero latency on that bit…

//It’s more than 12 years now since I ‘emigrated’. Time flies, but there are some things that seem to have changed (to me), in any case, things which catch my attention:

  • Police cars are really… loud and flashy (I guess that’s the point, but they almost look like toys)
  • Talking trains, talking lifts (“the door is closing, the door is closing”). Just makes me want to say “WILL YOU SHUT UP?!”
  • Warnings, notices, posters, stickers everywhere: “be careful, beware, watch out, danger”. Signs to prevent morons from hurting themselves, and most of all, to prevent them suing anyone. Health and Safety…
  • CCTV cameras everywhere. I hate security cameras. I kind of accept them in shops, train stations, stuff like that. But outside, in main roads, side roads, back roads, I think it’s total overkill. Wherever you go, Big Brother is watching you and he doesn’t care. Security cameras don’t stop you getting mugged; they just give the TV news something to show while they’re reporting your mugging.

However, I did get my own back on the Oyster card! I went to top it up, realised I’d put the wrong money in and hit the ‘cancel’ button… and hit the jackpot! About £8 spilled out. I’ve been checking all the top-up kiosks since then!
