Fun ... Frime

Last week there was a 'try our cars' day organised by a few local garages, with helicopter flights and free beer into the bargain.

It was raining all day, but I went to have a look anyway. I didn't have any cash handy for the helicopter flight (at 45 francs it was a bargain), and the weather wasn't really amenable anyway. But I did have a bit of fun trying one of the many cars that I know I'll never buy. A Mercedes SLK200, one with a magic roof (not that I bothered trying that!), 180hp, automatic (with little buttons for changing gear if you so choose) etc.. Only 63000 francs (special offer). I say 'only' because there was another at 130 thousand... also second hand (9 months old).

Unfortunately, they don't let you go off in their Mercedes on your own, so I didn't get to let rip. But I'm just too cautious now anyway, after 3 years driving a diesel, I feel too much sympathy for the engine when the revs get too high.

In any case, quite apart from the obscene prices, if I was going to buy a sports car, it would be a Nissan 350Z.

Nostalgia being what it is, nothing will ever beat driving my trusty red Mark II Vauxhall Cavalier hatchback along my favourite 'cross country' route from Reading to Portsmouth (to go to Brittany on the ferry, of course).
