Hier et avant hier j'ai mis deux fois la même photo. La raison est un peu compliqué, mais pour ceux qui s'y intéressent, voilà:

C'est que quand j'ai crée ce blog, il n'y avait moyen que d'envoyer des photos, et non pas d'autres images, alors j'ai dû mettre les petits drapeaux français et anglais ailleurs. Mais voilà que l'endroit où je les 'héberge' va bientôt fermer.

L'idée de parcourir les 600+ articles de ce blog pour changer les images ne me tentait pas des masses, alors hier j'ai fait un test pour voir si j'arrivais à exporter le blog en entier sur mon ordinateur, tout corriger puis réimporter. Mais pour être sûr, j'ai réimporter sur un autre blog à côté.

Ca avait l'air d'avoir fonctionner, alors j'ai tout supprimer du blog 'de test'.

Mais de retour dans ce blog, je ne voyais plus que les articles déjà publié, pas ceux qui étaient à venir.

Comme je trouvais dommage de louper la photo de Kalia, Rebecca & Noémie, je l'ai réutilisé. Puis voilà que ce soir je découvre que tout n'était pas perdu. Tant mieux !

Bref, un de ces prochains jour, il va falloir que je prenne mon courage à deux mains pour faire le grand saut !

Yesterday and the day before, I used the same photo. The reason why is slightly technical, but just in case there's anyone out there who's really that bored, here goes:

When I started this blog, many moons ago, you could only upload photos, not other types of image, so I hosted the little flags on another server. Recently I discovered that the other server will soon be going offline, so I've been looking into ways to 'save' my flags.

As you can imagine, I'm not too hot on the idea of individually updating 600+ posts.

Yesterday I did a dry run at exporting the whole blog in one big file, correcting all the references, then importing back. But to be on the safe side, I imported into another test blog. Everything seemed to have gone ok, so I deleted all the posts from the test blog.

Returning to this blog, I discovered that all my "here's one I prepared earlier" posts had disappeared. I guessed it was some problem with crossover between the two blogs, but thought it was a shame to miss out the photo of Kalia, Rebecca and Noémie, so I used it for another post.

This evening, I discovered that all was not lost, so much the better...

Holidays ... Vacances

Ce soir je commence 3 semaines de vacances, je crois bien que c'est la première fois depuis que j'étais écolier.

This evening I start a 3 week-long holiday. I think it's the first time since I was at school that I've had three weeks off in a row.

Sacrifice

Je viens de regarder un 'webcast' par un développeur américain qui m'a beaucoup touché.
Il a abandonné les certitudes confortables d'un emploi stable, il a vendu sa maison et déménagé sa famille pour louer une maison dans une région moins cher. Il a sacrifié beaucoup de ses richesses.

Pour poursuivre son rêve informatique.

Ca fait penser au jeune homme riche.

Et moi j'en suis où ?

I just watched a webcast by an american software coder, which I found quite moving.
He left the comfortable certainties of 'steady work', sold his house, moved his family to a cheaper state where he could rent a property. Gave up a lot of his material comforts.

All to pursue a dream of developing his own software.

Reminds me a bit of the rich young man.

Blécherette

En général par ici si on parle de 'La Blécherette', on pense d'abord au centre de contrôle des autos où on va pour faire "l'expertise" - mais à côté il y a "l'aéroport de Lausanne" où il y a eu une journée portes ouvertes il y a quelques temps.

On a pu voir un hélicoptère de l'armée Suisse qui décollait, puis plusieurs types d'avion différent. Celui dans lequel Kalia est assis est un diesel !

If you say you've been to "La Blécherette" to anyone from round here, you'll get a sympathetic look and asked "did it pass?". It's where you go for the compulsory car check-up (MOT for UK people). But 'Lausanne Airport' is there too.

They had an open day a few days back, and we got to see a big helicopter taking off, and to sit in some planes. The one Kalia is sitting in is a diesel!

Two sisters ... Deux soeurs

Rebecca a bientôt 16 mois, et elle commence à s'affirmer, et même faire des crasses de temps en temps. Et sa soeur n'est pas en reste, comme vous imaginez.

Mais il y a des moments de cooperation et de rigolades partagées...

Rebecca will soon be 16 months old, and she's starting to stick up for herself, and even take the odd unprovoked swipe. Needless to say, her sister isn't always sweetness and light either.

But there are moments of cooperation and shared giggles.

More corn on the cob ... Maïs

Le maïs a la cote auprès de nos deux filles - dommage que ça vienne de l'Afrique du Sud à cet époque de l'année...

Both our girls love corn on the cob - shame it's imported from South Africa at this time of year.

Swiss Vapeur Parc

Des nouveaux visites c'est toujours un bon pretexte pour retourner au Swiss Vapeur Parc.

We'd been looking forward for a while to taking Pop to discover Swiss Vapeur Parc. I think Grandma had a nice time too...

Call me stupid, but ... j'suis peut-être idiot, mais

Je n'arrive pas à réconcilier ces deux réalités:
1. Les cadres à Georg Fischer réduisent leur salaires de 10%, et les directeurs de 20%, dans un tentative de préserver l'entreprise (ici)
2. Le Royal Bank of Scotland fait faillite sous la direction de Fred Goodwin, et il s'en tire avec une rente de £342,000 par année - il n'a que 50 ans!

I just can't understand how to reconcile these two facts:

Pour une raison inconnue mais bienvenue, nos deux filles ont commencé à s'endormir plus tôt le soir. Une nouvelle vie se profile à l'horizon !

Je passais à côté de notre bibliothèque l'autre jour (conséquence directe de la phrase précédente), et j'ai vu un livre que j'ai acheté il y a au moins 12 ans en arrière. Je me suis dit que ce serait intéressant de le relire.

Très honnêtement, je ne me rappelle plus tellement ma réaction lors de la première lecture - je ne saurais plus dire si j'ai été frappé, choqué, ennuyé. Ce qui est incroyable dans la progression d'une vie c'est qu'une même idée peut passer par - incompréhensible, révolutionnaire, normale, banale. Peut-être que quand je l'ai lu la dernière fois je n'y ai rien compris, tandis que cette fois-ci, je suis plutôt "Oui, bien sur, c'est exactement ça".

Ce livre (Post-evangelical) n'existe apparemment pas en français - je songe sérieusement à rémédier à cette situation, tellement le message me semble important.

For some unknown reason, our girls have started going to bed earlier in the evenings. There is a light at the end of the tunnel!

(As a consequence of which) I was perusing the bookshelf the other day and came across an 'old' book that I bought at least 12 years ago. I thought it might be interesting to have a second look.

To be honest, I can't really remember what my reaction to it was the first time - I can't remember whether I was impressed, shocked or bored. It's amazing how any given idea can pass through different phases depending on where you are in your 'growing' - incomprehensible, revolutionary, ordinary, banal. Maybe when I read it the first time, I just didn't understand, whereas this time round, I keep thinking, "Yes, that's it, obvious".

Researching for this post, I discovered that the author has since become an Anglican vicar, rather drole, but there you go. There is a nice spiel on reactions to the book here on his website.

Funny that the tagline of the InternetMonk site I mentioned the other day is "dispatches from the post-evangelical wilderness".

Little My

Un temps, Little My était mon petit surnom pour Kalia. Ici Rebecca a tout à fait la tête.

I referred to Kalia as Little My for a while on this blog. In this photo, Rebecca looks a little Little Myish.

Lego

Grandma a apporté un pirate en Lego pour Kalia. Malheureusement elle n'a pas eu le temps pour jouer avec pendant que Grandma était là.

Après coup on a ouvert le paquet ensemble, et elle m'a étonné (à nouveau) parce qu'elle a su suivre les instructions pour le monter toute seule, comme une grande.

Mais elle est grande - ça va vite...

Grandma bought a Lego pirate kit for Kalia, but she didn't have time to play with it while they were here.

We opened it together the other day, and she surprised me by following the instruction all on her own.

This growing up thing is happening too fast...

A l'aéroport on a bu un café dans le nouveau restaurant 'Altitude'. Très classe, avec vue panoramique sur la piste d'atterissage. Ca vaut le détour.

At the airport we had a coffee in the new 'Altitude' restaurant. Very swish with panoramic view of the runway - recommended if you've got time to kill.

Tough call ... Choix difficiles

Aujourd'hui on a dû annoncé deux nouvelles difficiles à nos deux familles. Le week-end prochain il y a une première communion en Italie, et mi-juillet il y a une fête de famille en Angleterre. On a décidé qu'on n'ira ni à l'une ni à l'autre.

Notre aventure le mois passé nous a montré nos limites en ce qui concerne les grandes voyages avec petits enfants. Dans le temps ça me faisait rien de faire Suisse-Toscane (ou même Suisse-Bretagne) d'un trait de nuit, puis une petite grasse matinée et hop!

Je n'ose pas dire que je me fais vieux, mais je me fais fatigué. Et Madame aussi.

Et puis les filles doivent toujours beaucoup s'adapter. Ca faisait mal au coeur au mariage de devoir les réveiller quand elles dormaient, puis essayer de les faire dormir n'importe où.

Alors on va essayer de 'rester tranquille' ce coup-ci. Les filles grandiront, les choses seront autrement, le temps des grands voyages reviendra.

Today we had the difficult task of announcing 'bad' news to our respective families. Next weekend there is a first communion in Italy, and mid-July there is a family 'do' in the UK. We've decided not to go to either.

Our wedding adventure last month showed us our limits as far as long journies with little children is concerned. In times past I thought nothing of driving non-stop overnight from Switzerland to Tuscany, or even Switzerland to Brittany - just a little lie-in at the other end and I was good to go.

I daren't say I'm getting old, but I've got a bad sleep deficit. Madame too.

And long journies oblige the girls to do a lot of adapting too. It was horrible at the wedding seeing them try to sleep in the most unconducive circumstances, then having to wake them up again to go somewhere else.

So this time round we're ducking out, and we're going to try to take it easy. The girls will grow, things will change, the time for big 'adventures' will return.
