Gingerbread house ... Maisons de pain d'épice

On a reçu deux 'kit' IKEA pour des maisons de pain d'épice, et on a passé un après-midi très joyeux à les décorer ensemble.

We got two IKEA gingerbread house kits for Christmas, and spent a wonderful afternoon together decorating them.

Rebecca était tellement fière de sa création qu'encore maintenant elle a de la peine à en manger "je me suis donné de la peine!".

Rebecca was very proud of her work, and even now finds it a bit difficult to start eating it: "it was so much work!".

Turkey, turkey ... Double dinde

J'aime bien un peu de dinde à Noël, mais ne peux pas généralement justifier l'achat rien que pour moi. Cette année, comme l'année dernière, j'ai profité qu'on organisait un truc pour le 31, et j'ai acheté une dinde moitié prix.

Une fois que j'avais compris la logique des actions à la Migros, je m'en suis acheté une deuxième !

Phase une: préparer la farce.
 

I do like a bit of turkey at Christmas, but can't really justify buying 'a monster' just for me. So I took advantage of the fact that we were organising a 31st 'do' to buy a half-price turkey. Then once I'd discovered that I'd worked out the shops' logic for half-pricing, I went and got another one too (one day there were 10 half-price turkeys, what a conundrum!

First phase: after having consulted authoritative sources (internet & Mum), DIY stuffing.

Phase 2: cuisson, puis découpe. Heureusement à l'église il y a un four professionnel avec fonction vapeur qui permet de cuire en un temps record et sans se soucier que ça sèche. Voilà les deux bêtes prêts à être servis, avec un plat de farce, et la soupe qui mijotent déjà au fond.

Fortunately at the church there's a super-duper combined roast/steam cooker where you can just wop the turkeys in and they stay nice and moist and you don't have to worry about basting them or anything. Here are the two 'beasts' (plus a dish of stuffing, and the soup already under way in the background).

This is it! ... Ca y est!

Voilà le nouveau look. J'espère que ça vous va.

Hauteville 4

Est-ce que vous vous rappelez de l'histoire de la famille Hauteville? On a visité le musée du jeu pendant les vacances, où ils ont reçu la collection de jeux de société de la famille.

Do you remember the Hauteville 'saga' from last year? We visited the Toy Museum over the holidays, where quite a lot of their parlour games had been donated.

Christmas ... Noël

Seulement avec un mois de retard, voilà quelques photos des jours autour de Noël.

Après manger on est sorti prendre l'air, et regardez quel beau temps il faisait!

A month late, but here are a few photos from around Christmas.

After Christmas lunch we went out for a walk: look at the gorgeous weather we had! (We've only had one weekend of winter so far this year!).

Une mini bouteille de whisky qui m'a particulièrement plu. J'ai pris la photo pour pouvoir me souvenir pour une autre fois!

This was one of the mini bottles from a 12-box set I received last year (or the year before?). I particularly appreciated this one so took this photo so I could remember. The one thing I don't like about whisky? The bottles and boxes are so beautiful that I never want to throw them away.

Les filles ont reçu un microscope. Ca me fait penser qu'il faudrait qu'on sorte un peu pour aller chercher des choses à examiner.

The girls got a microscope for Christmas. I must start taking them out to collect stuff to examine. We've done most of the inside things we could think of.

New look ... Nouveau visage

A peine ce blog crée (c'est à dire il y a 11 ans), j'avais déjà commencé à travailler sur un nouveau 'look'.

Seulement voilà que le temps a passé, et je n'ai pas vraiment beaucoup avancé.

C'est derniers temps, j'ai ressorti mon travail, et j'ai pu le tester et ça a l'air de jouer.

Donc ne soyez pas dépaysés si un de ces quatre en arrivant ici les choses ne ressemblent plus comme avant.

I started working on a different, more personalised appearance 11 years ago (yes, right after I started the blog), but never got round to finishing it.

But I've just tested out a new template, and it looks like I want it to, so in a while (unspecified), don't be shocked or disorientated if you turn up here and it doesn't look the same anymore.

The Threat is already inside

1. We can't keep the bad guys out.
2. Besides, the threat is already inside.
3. More surveillance won't get rid of terrorism, either.
4. Defeating the Islamic State won't make terrorism go away.
5. Terrorism still remains a relatively minor threat, statistically speaking.
6. But don't relax too much, because things will probably get worse before they get better.
7. Meanwhile, poorly planned Western actions can make things still worse.
8. Terrorism is a problem to be managed.
9. To do this, however, we need to move beyond the political posturing that characterizes most public debates about counterterrorism and instead speak honestly about the costs and benefits of different approaches.
10. We need to stop rewarding terrorism.

Actually, scratch the title. 'Common' sense is the problem. People need more 'good' sense, some statistics, and an understanding of risk.

Restaurant

Un soir je devais aller discuter avec les voisins. J'ai laissé les deux filles avec des consignes très claires: mettre leur pyjama, ne pas se disputer, être 'sages'.

Au retour, ça sentait le complot, et on m'a 'enfermé' au bureau parce que "c'était pas prêt". En attendant j'ai quand même eu droit à un apéritif servi par une belle serveuse...

One evening I had to go and see our neighbour, so I left the girls on their own with strict instructions: put their pyjamas on, don't fight, be 'good'.

When I got back, there was a conspiratorial air about the place, and I was shunted off into the office, because "it wasn't ready". But I did get a little aperitif served by a charming waitress...

Puisque l'attente se prolongait, on m'a aussi apporté une amuse bouche: lait chocolaté, biscuits et noix.

As it was taking rather a while, I got a second aperitif: cold chocolate, biscuits and nuts.

Pour finir j'étais invité à manger par les deux tenancières du 'Restaurant Grand Benjamin', où j'ai pu choisir sur le menu écrit à la main.

Elles étaient fière, et moi aussi.

One it was ready, I was invited to eat by the two owners of the 'Restaurant Grand Benjamin', where I could choose what I wanted from the hand-written menu.

They were both very proud of themselves, and so was I.

Basel ... Bâle

Le but premier de la visite à Bâle était d'aller au bains chauds (Aquabasilea), avec une nuit à l'hôtel. On avait prévu des jeux de société, mais la télé a gagné !

The aim of the trip to Basel was to go Aquabasilea, a kind of hot baths/water shoot playground (think Centre Parcs, but bigger, more modern, and warmer!). Then spending a night in the hotel, where we planned to play games, but ended up watching telly.

Le lendemain, nous avons profité d'aller (en tram) visiter le marché de Noel, où il y avait un souffleur de verre, ce qui m'a rappelé celui qui se trouvait (il y a beaucoup d'années en arrière) à Dinan (rue du Jerzuel). C'était toujours mon métier de rêve...

The next day we took the tram to the Basel Christmas Market, where there was a glass 'blower'. This reminded me of the one I used to love to visit in Dinan (mumble years ago). Still my dream job...

Le truc qui a le plus retenu l'attention des filles, des marionnettes de rennes qui chantaient.

The thing which most interested the girls were these animated reindeers exchanging chit-chat and singing songs.

Une approche originale pour les 'verres' à consigne !

Mulled wine and hot chocolate were served in these.

Un petit tour en petit train.

A little trip on a little train.

Et une grosse crêpe au chocolat à la sortie.

Then a big pancake full of chocolate.
