Hong Kong Day 2

Second day, lazy start (in fact, I think it was a lazy start every day!), here's a view of the mini beach from the apartment we were staying in.

A funny juxtaposition of a sailing school and monster boats.

Un bateau un peu plus modeste.
And a little junk-style boat.

Ben came to get us again, and we were off to visit Kowloon, I was really struck by the narrowness of some of the buildings: multiple stories but only about one room's worth of surface area.

Kowloon means 9 dragons, because there are 9 hills, and according to Chinese mythology, each hill has a dragon. These dragons are said to come down from their hill top to drink in the sea every night. And they take this stuff seriously: look up Hong Kong dragon hole!

Rebecca darted in and out of the shops to keep cool.

This time we were going to discover a new Hong Kong speciality - dim sum - which is sort of Hong Kong tapas. Pauline was our guide and translator (cultural as much as linguistic!).

Here is a model of what the walled city used to look like.

We headed off to spend a while at Ben & Pauline's place, and the kids had a great time playing with the Nintendo Switch.

Then we were off out to another restaurant - this time to try some Peking duck (along with hundreds of other delicious specialities).

Surtout du canard laqué.
That's some duck.

Just before catching the ferry back across the harbour, I got a photo of this junk, with the modern boat behind it.

A rare family photo kindly taken by Ben before we said our goodbyes.

Hong Kong Day 1

On the way to Cairns, we made the most of the trip by passing two days in Sydney. On the way back, we spent four days in Hong Kong, where contrary to the typical mental picture (as above), we discovered quite a lot of green lushness:

This was the view from the flat where we were staying in Chung Hom Kok. Getting there we discovered the joys of Hong Kong taxis, which are all the same red Toyotas, but with drivers having variable levels of English comprehension. They apparently get driven night and day, as drivers share them (or rather, the drivers don't own the cars, they pay the taxi companies rent to be able to use them).

We were staying in a large (by HK standards) flat where the girls had fun playing with the electric piano.

The guy on the left is paid to lifeguard the mini-beach, even if there's no-one there.

View of an aircraft carrier, not sure what nationality (it has number 78 on the side which is the same as the USS Gerald Ford, but the proportions don't seem the same as in photos of that), There are monster boats plying in and out of Hong Kong all the time, and then even bigger monster boats than that.

Our friend Ben (from way back when) came to pick us up and take us into town where we met up with his wife Pauline and their sons to eat some delicious Chinese food. Here we could watch the chefs making the dumplings which was the speciality we had come to check out.

Yum, just look at all that delicious stuff!

After the meal, our friends took us to the nearest bus stop so we could up to The Peak, which is one of those places that tourists visit, mostly because of the greenness, and the view.

The problem was that it was terribly hot and humid (we actually apparently got pretty good weather by Hong Kong standards, far less foggy, smoggy skies than normal), so we sort of dashed out from the air-conditioned security of the mall to grab a photo.

Et puis des glaces.
Then dashed back in again to buy an ice cream.

From there we walked down the Old Peak Road, which was actually quite pleasant, and then through the Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical gardens, but by that point Rebecca was not feeling good at all, and everyone was hot and bothered, so we 'cheated' and took a taxi back to the flat.

I went to buy something to eat from the local Welcome store, and we admired the view.
