Fun ... On s'amuse

Over the last months, the girls have been doing art therapy with their Mum, and several friends have come along for the ride. A chance to get their hands dirty without getting into trouble!

They've done pottery, craft and more. Accompanied by a 'sharing' time where they've talked about things like jealousy, the Golden Rule, 'stranger danger', etc..

Fishing ...

The Sunday School did a 'discovery' day, and Kalia chose fishing. She only caught one fish, but was very happy with her day outside in the sun.

Leysin pony

One sunny Saturday in June, we headed up into the 'mountains' for an afternoon with other 'diabetes families'.

D'abord un tour en calèche.
Starting with a trip in a horse-drawn cart.

Suivi d'un moment à bichonner un poney.
Then some horse-polishing.

Et ensuite promenade.
Then it was time for a ride.

Meanwhile, us 'D-parents' were able to share notes.

It was wonderful to have all the ages together for a while, and the fact that siblings and friends come too means that, as one mother said, by the end of the afternoon, you don't remember who has diabetes and who doesn't.

Asymmetry ... Asymmetrie

I don't often do the political thing here, and I don't think I've ever commented on Israel/Palestine before. I think I might have a bias towards the Israeli side of things, but I endeavour to remain 'balanced'.

But I'm increasingly conscious of a sort of blindness to the asymmetry in lots of the 'mainstream' attitudes that I come across on Twitter. Specifically in relation to the recent horrific kidnappings/murders of Israeli and Palestinian teenagers. There was a tweet doing the rounds asking why Obama hadn't condemned the Palestinian's death, where he had for the Israelis (ironically, there had previously been complaints that he hadn't said anything about the Israelis: I sometimes think that if I were a politician I'd just plain refuse to comment on any of these 'horror' stories. Probably one reason why I'm not likely to be a politician).

Yet nobody seems to have noticed that while Netanyahu condemned the murder of the Palestinian (kudos to Al Jazeerah for reporting that bit too), apparently Hamas praised the abduction of the Israelis (as many others, the BBC reported Hamas' denial, but omitted this rather important detail).

I admire this quote from one of the families of the three Israeli teenagers:
"If the Arab youth was murdered because of nationalistic motives then this is a horrible and horrendous act. There is no difference between Arab blood and Jewish blood. Murder is murder. There is no forgiveness or justification for any murder."

(In light of the circumstances, I think us Christians can give them a pass on our theories about forgiveness...)

You might want to compare that, with this:
If they [Israel] accuse him of this (the kidnapping), and if it is a true accusation," said Aysha's mother, "I will be proud of him until Judgment Day. If the accusation that he did it is true... My boys are all righteous, pious and pure. The goal of my children is the triumph of Islam
The thing is, as it stands I'm not sure that anyone knows for sure who killed the israelis or the palestinian. Doesn't stop a whole lot of people jumping to conclusions.

One thing I've noticed trying to research this post is that the online media often seem to quote each other, without naming sources, so it's very difficult to find the original source: for all of the quotes above, I wasn't able to work out where something was first said. I'm guessing that maybe they were mostly first said on TV, so maybe that's why I can't find them.
