10 things ... 10 choses

Well here we are, now I'm 40.

Obviously the question everyone asks (and I ask myself) is "how does it feel?"

Sometimes I answer, that I've already been 40 for 20 years.

It's only half joking, I did start my midlife crisis a long time ago - wondering what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. Now, time has passed, I seem to be doing things, still not sure what I want to do with my life!

Anyway, to celebrate, I thought I'd treat you to an internet meme - 10 things you (probably) didn't know about me:

In the order I thought of them
  1. It annoys me when posters for films show the actors' photos in a different order than their names are written (like this)
  2. When possible, I'll take a toilet over a urinal. And sit. This started years ago when I was at La Maison Blanche and the ceiling was too low to stand. I ended up figuring out it was one less thing to think about.
  3. I hold my breath when joggers run by, so I don't get a lung-full of their BO
  4. I don't do very ecological showers - I tend to leave the water running even when I'm lathering up. This is also a throwback to years back when the bathrooms were positively freezing and keeping the hot water going was the only way to stay warm!
  5. 14-odd years ago I sat on a bench in Evian pontificating about the badness of alcohol, and how it pollutes your God-given ability to think and react correctly. I started this article with a nice cold beer...
  6. Number 3 notwithstanding, I don't often wear perfume - I prefer (whenever possible) to smell of nothing.
  7. I'm a bit of a frustrated non tap dancer. When I'm running down stairs, you may notice my feet do 4 taps on each step...
  8. Whenever I'm driving a long journey, I have running 'trip computer' in my brain, which is continually trying to work out if I can make an average of 60 mph, and if not, how much faster I need to go (for how long) to make up, and also if we stop, how long can I afford to stop for, etc...
  9. I got a book called 'Getting things done' for Christmas. I haven't finished it yet.
  10. I touch type (mostly), but with two different keyboard layouts. One for English and one for French. I actually have three layouts on my work computer - so that my colleagues don't get lost (as they use the Swiss French layout, and I use the French French one). (For the non-techies amongst you, the computer has no way of knowing what letters are actually printed on the keys of your keyboard - so basically you can fix it up any way you want).

Not great ... Mediocre

Not immensely proud of this - lots of borked notes, but I figured I ought to have at least one thing to show for every practice session.

For the curious, the new shoes are easier to play with, but I'm still a long way off playing anything decent. I seem to have a balance problem, I have to hold on: otherwise the weight of my legs makes me fall forwards.

This is more John Stanley - Variation I, Andante. Note changing between manuals for different sounds.

This just in ...

This weekend it was my 'surprise' birthday party, organised with lots of care and attention by Madame.

It was only a 'surprise' as opposed to a surprise because I had had suspicions for a while, and in the preceding weeks, a few strange utterances or happenings had confirmed them.

But what I was totally unprepared for was my brother, Jon and Dave (best friends from when I was ... younger) turning up in the middle of the party.

That was the icing on the cake - lots of icing.

Lots of lovely people helped getting the party ready (and tidying up afterwards - I wasn't allowed!), and especially our friend Catherine, who - with her family - prepared an amazing meal for 40-odd people. I'd tell you what was on the menu, but I'd probably get it all wrong - it was very posh, in any case. I can still feel the taste of it in my mouth (probably 'cos I just ate some leftovers!)

I received 40 envelopes and 40 little presents to open over the next 40 days (yeah, right)

On Sunday, we (myself, and the other three 'anglais') were kicked out of the house with instructions for (pre-paid) breakfast in a local coffee-shop, then lunch in a restaurant. All we did was eat and talk, all day! What more could you want?!

I got a bit more time with Jon and Dave yesterday before taking them to the airport.

When I got home, we went out for a walk and picnic by the edge of the lake together, just us four.

All in all, not a bad weekend!

(After a couple of days talking English (and mispronouncing hyperbole, amongst other things), I find myself thinking in English again)

Shoes ... Chaussures

Finally got my organ shoes, not bad eh?

I'm looking forward to trying them out. They're considerably narrower than my normal shoes (see below), so I'm hoping I'll spend less time hitting two notes at once.

However, even though they weren't expensive, they cost me a lot!

Price: 60.0
Post: 50.0
VAT: 8.0
Administrative costs: 20.0

Yes, the Swiss state has outsourced VAT on postal deliveries to the swiss Post office, who make us pay for the 'privilege' of having them charge us VAT. So I'm paying more for having paid VAT than what I pay in VAT, and I'm paying more to receive the shoes than I am to buy them!

(Of course, you don't have to wear shoes to play the organ, but playing bare foot is frowned upon, apparently!).

Vinzel

This time last week, we were invited to some friends' house for the afternoon. Much to the delight of the girls, they had a cat (which promptly disappeared) and some birds (which had no choice).

A snapped this whatever it is sipping nectar out of flowers, 'bout the size of a little fingernail.

They had goats too, Kalia probably spent about an hour in there. They were very friendly - jumping up with their hooves on our chests like dogs, trying to eat our clothes, and even doing some playful butting.

Rebecca preferred feeding them from a safe distance.

Here's one of the kids, lying on my lap!

Our friend let the girls help him take turns watering the garden.

Followed by a little rest before heading home.

Last week it was the 'Night of the Museums' (when they're all free, and open 'til late) in our area. Some friends invited us with other families. First we went on the Blonay-Chamby railway and museum. (We already went there two years ago, if you remember 1, 2, 3, 4)

When we got there, the parents wanted beer, the children wanted ice cream, and then they played at... something involving climbing.

I did take a moment to go and have a look at the old trains while we were waiting for the train back. This notice says "Please don't spit in this carriage" - fortunately not a problem these days (there are others).

Grand luxe dans un wagon Bernina.
You could definitely travel in style in those days.

Though it isn't the most ecological form of transport.

After the trains, we took the bus to the Château de Chillon. On the way we had free music from two people playing hurdy-gurdies.

In the castle courtyard, you could buy yourself a sausage on a stick and roast it on the open fire, while listening to medieval music and watching a sword dance. An excellent experience, unless you drop your sausage in the fire!

Visiting some parts of the castle, Rebecca managed to get a place on one of the interactive information points.
