Stuff ... Divers

A few odds and sods to round off this years series of posts about the car show. Here is a car in the nude.

And this is a cute little 'pick-up' which can squish up to have no boot (the back moves forward).

Some chap had an exhibition of his junk-yard creations. Very ingenious, but I wouldn't put one in my sitting room (and this was one of the most aesthetic ones).

Probably the most interesting bit of the whole show: two people from Citroen showing how they sew the leather onto seats, dashboards and steering wheels.

King of instruments ...

(Organ in Lausanne Cathedral: only European Cathedral organ to be built by an American company. Cost a sweet 5 million francs, inaugurated 2003)

Starting my internet research into organs, I was amazed by the depths of my ignorance. There was lots of stuff I knew I didn't know, but there was even more I had never even considered - stuff I didn't know because I simply hadn't even ever asked myself the question.

For example, the 'volume' pedal on an organ ('swell' they call it) doesn't actually change the volume of the sound coming out of the pipes (it can't if you think about it - changing how hard you blow a pipe changes its pitch, after all), what it actually does is open and close shutters (louvres) on the 'swell' chamber that the pipes are in (only a subset of the organ's pipes are thus enclosed).

In fact the whole 'hardware' side of the organ is fascinating - being an organ builder is a real multi-disciplinary vocation: you have to know about metalwork, woodwork, acoustics, architecture, music theory and plenty more.

And then, I knew that the piano was the "Queen of instruments", but I never - ever - thought to ask what the king of instruments might be.

Now I know.

There is a whole host of 'special' vocabulary that goes with this world: here is a pretty comprehensive one, this one has more explanation. I like the onomatopoeic "chiff": which is the sound that a pipe makes when/before the note sounds. Two other interesting ones are "literature" (organ music, used much the same as one would for normal written-word literature), and "registration" - which is the act (and art) of deciding which stops to play for which music. Coming from piano, the most obvious complication of the organ is playing with your feet (though it's not the playing that's the problem, it's reading and playing with feet and left hand at the same time). However two other more subtle challenges are the "registration" and all the articulation/dynamics: hitting a key harder makes no difference, and if you want it to carry on sounding, you've got to keep your finger on it. This means that you can't make certain notes stand out by hitting them harder, you have to alter how long you hold them down. Even thinking about this hurts my brain, let alone trying!

And organs are old, very old. Even organs as we know them go back centuries, and the first organs were built back in antiquity. The oldest playable organ in the world is actually in Switzerland. Though substantial parts of it have been replaced (since 1435!), the case is mostly still original (according to this source).

More juicy facts soon.

Wisdom of old ...

Found here.
Usually, even a non-Christian knows something about the earth, the heavens, and the other elements of this world, about the motion and orbit of the stars and even their size and relative positions, about the predictable eclipses of the sun and moon, the cycles of the years and the seasons, about the kinds of animals, shrubs, stones, and so forth, and this knowledge he hold to as being certain from reason and experience.
Now, it is a disgraceful and dangerous thing for an infidel to hear a Christian, presumably giving the meaning of Holy Scripture, talking nonsense on these topics; and we should take all means to prevent such an embarrassing situation, in which people show up vast ignorance in a Christian and laugh it to scorn.
The shame is not so much that an ignorant individual is derided, but that people outside the household of faith think our sacred writers held such opinions, and, to the great loss of those for whose salvation we toil, the writers of our Scripture are criticized and rejected as unlearned men. If they find a Christian mistaken in a field which they themselves know well and hear him maintaining his foolish opinions about our books, how are they going to believe those books in matters concerning the resurrection of the dead, the hope of eternal life, and the kingdom of heaven, when they think their pages are full of falsehoods and on facts which they themselves have learnt from experience and the light of reason?
Reckless and incompetent expounders of Holy Scripture bring untold trouble and sorrow on their wiser brethren when they are caught in one of their mischievous false opinions and are taken to task by those who are not bound by the authority of our sacred books. For then, to defend their utterly foolish and obviously untrue statements, they will try to call upon Holy Scripture for proof and even recite from memory many passages which they think support their position, although they understand neither what they say nor the things about which they make assertion.

Electric cars ...

Since reading this book (did I mention that it's thoroughly amazing and you must buy it now?), I've been taking more interest in electric cars. This one is the famous Tesla electric sports car.

This is some kind of concept automated mini-taxi.

You can also use the electric thing to salve your conscience.

You can already buy one of these! It's a Renault Twizy. 10 thousand euros, open to the elements, and you have to rent the battery (which is actually a good idea - interchangeable batteries are definitely the way to go).

Ford's doing it too (everyone's doing it, except Rolls Royce, Ferrari & co).

An electric motor is a lot smaller than a combustion engine, but the problem is finding somewhere to hide all the batteries.

BMW are still at concept stage for the moment.

Un Opel converti en éléctrique.
An electric Opel.

I learnt lots of interesting things. Under this bonnet (Nissan Leaf), you can see that even in an electric car, you need a 'normal' battery - unless you want to completely redesign all the accessories. Some models have a solar panel to top it up. On the left, the thing that looks like an engine is actually the AC/DC converter/transformer. You can do special 'flash' recharges which are DC, and push the battery up to 80% capacity in 30 minutes, but it ears the batteries out faster.

This one looks like a Smart that got stuck between two buses!

The crowning moment of the day was getting to test drive one of these! Not a sports car, but if you put your foot down, it reacts nicely. The best bit is seeing your energy consumption go negative when you break! Just need to find 50 thousand francs, and a parking space with electricity...

People say (and I used to, until recently) "Yeah, electric cars. Don't help anything, you still have to generate the electricity". But that's the whole point! Once the car is electric you don't care how the electricity is generated. It would even be more efficient to use the petrol to generate electricity centrally and then charge electric cars with it.
