In Vienna ... Dans Vienne

Samedi la météo était pourrie, mais on est sorti quand même - quand on n'a que deux jours sur place, on peut pas se permettre de trainer en attendant qu'il fasse beau!

Saturday, the weather was not so great, but we went out anyway - you can't sit around reading when you've only got two days to visit! This is part of the building around the train station.

Pour s'encourager on s'est arrêté dans un des nombreux cafés, pour des gâteaux et chocolats chauds!

To encourage the troops we stopped in one of the many coffee shops. For cakes and hot chocolate. Yum!

Après avoir encore marché un bon bout, la pluie devenant toujours plus forte, on s'est réfugié dans un vieux tram qui fait le tour du 'Ring'. On a fait un tour et demi, en écoutant les commentaires. Ensuite on s'est arrêté dans un restaurant un peu 'snob', où on a du attendre longtemps pour manger (je me suis demandé si c'était une façon subtil de décourager les familles avec enfants...).

After walking for a while more, the rain got increasingly hard, so we hopped on the old tram that takes tourists round the 'Ring', and did a trip-and-a-half listening to the commentary (you get to keep the in-ear headphones afterwards - terribly wasteful but I suspect cheaper for them than cleaning them). Then we stopped in a rather swish restaurant, where they made the children feel welcome by taking an incredibly long time to serve food (that's my suspicious interpretation anyway...)

Ensuite on a continué de marcher vers le 'Prater' et le 'Riesenrad'. Avec un membre de la famille qui râler sec sur la pluie et ses parents qui lui faisait marcher. L'affront! (Le destin me rattrape enfin; mes parents auraient bien rit je crois...).

Then we carried on walking towards 'Prater' and the Riesenrad. With one member of the family grumbling and mumbling. (I thought wrily to myself that this is destiny visiting itself upon me, and my parents would have had a good chuckle).

C'est une grande GRANDE roue, de 67m de haut. Ici on voit une des cabines préparées pour un repas.

It's a big BIG wheel (not as big as the London Eye, but a tad older). Here you can see one of the posh cabins - you can pay to have receptions in them.

Il ne faut pas avoir les vertiges - les cabines sont solides, mais en vieux bois à l'intérieur.

La vue du haut, quand il fait moche et un peu gris, à gauche la cathédrale, qu'on n'a pas eu le temps de visiter, malheureusement.

The view from the top, in murky weather, is... murky, to the left is St Stephan's cathedral (which we unfortunately didn't have the time to visit)..

On a fait un tour sur les auto-tamponeuses. Du coup quelqu'un a retrouvé le sourire.

We had a go on the dodgems. With the big wheel and that, someone found their smile again.

 

Il y avait un genre de fête foraine permanente autour du Riesenrad. Sous ce temps-là, ça faisait pas franchement envie. Si jamais vous y allez, méfiez-vous du petit train touristique. On croyait qu'il nous emenait faire un tour du grand parc verdoyant, mais en fait, on a juste eu un droit à un tour de la fête foraine - donc en gros tu paies pour qu'ils te fassent la pub!

There was a kind of permanent fairground around the Riesenrad. In this kind of weather, not the most enticing of places. Beware if you ever go there: there is a mini train ride, which we thought would take us to visit the park. But instead it just took us round the amusement park - half suffocating us with the stench of the exhaust. So basically you pay to be taken round so that your kids then know all the rides to nag you about going on...
