Continuity of identity ... Continuité d'identité

L'identité c'est une drôle de notion.

Il y a des tonnes de livres sur le sujet. Personne ne peut vraiment le définir, mais on a tous une idée plus ou moins claire de ce que ça pourrait signifier.

J'y ai pensé dernièrement dans le contexte de promesses et engagements.

Quand on promet de faire quelque chose à l'avenir, quelque part on est en train d'engager son 'futur moi' à le faire. On compte sur le fait que son 'futur moi' va être d'accord avec l'engagement, et ne pas se retourner en disant: "Oui, mais ça c'était lui/elle, maintenant c'est moi!"

Je ne crois pas que je l'ai déjà entendu dit comme cela, mais j'ai un vague souvenir de quelqu'un qui disait: "Mais comment je peux promettre? Je ne sais pas ce que je penserai plus tard!"

C'est peut-être un truc de la Génération X, ne pas avoir suffisamment de continuité d'identité pour pouvoir considérer son être temporel comme une entité unique.

Identity is a funny thing.

There are mountains of books about it. Nobody can really define it, yet we all have a sort-of idea what it might mean.

I've been thinking about it in the context of promises and commitments.

If you think about it, when you promise to do something in the future, you are committing your future self to doing it. So you are trusting your future self to actually agree with your commitment, and hoping that your future self is not going to turn round and say: "Yeah, well, that was him/her, this is me!"

I'm not sure I've ever heard it said in so many words, but I do have a vague recollection of someone saying something like: "How can I promise? I don't know what I'll think then!"

Maybe it's a Generation X thing, not having sufficient continuity of identity (I had to work that in somewhere!) to be able to consider your temporal self as a whole.
