Birthday walk ... Promenade/anniversaire

For Kalia's godmother's 40th, we were invited for a walk/picnic together, followed by an evening meal in a chalet. We drove to Boudry, then to the train up to Champ-du-Moulin, in order to walk back down the Gorges de l'Areuse.

The girls usually moan about walking, even if it's just round the corner to the shops. But with all the kids, and things to see on the way (and a stick each), things were much easier.

Some of the scenery was like something out of Avatar.

There was even a little 'beach' to play in the sand on the way.

Playing ... Jouer

La meilleure chose de l'enfance?

Jouer.
The best bit about being a kid?

Playing.

Especially when you've got friends round. Even the 'big' girls let themselves get roped in if there's no-one around to tell them that it's for babies.

Volleyball

In an effort to make up for my non-sporting-role-model status, I bought tickets to go and see the semi- and finals of the Montreux Volley masters. In this photo we're watching China and Russia battle for third and fourth place.

Mission accomplie? J'en sais rien...
The girls managed to maintain interest for most of the first match, but started to tire in the second match, which was a shame, because the quality of play was amazing - with some 'saves' coming out of nowhere. In the end we left before it had finished, but the girls talked about it quite a bit since. Mission accomplished? Dunno...

Summer, at last! ...

After weeks (months) of mostly grey weather, Summer came in with a bang.

So it was off to the lake for a barbequeue with friends.

It's a lovely age when they're still not 100% independent, but big enough to venture slightly further afield without us having to be hovering right next to them.

Taste of the future? ... L'avenir?

The idea was to take a photo and then Photoshop it to see what she'd look like with no hair (can't remember how we got to that idea). In the end she took matters into her own hands.

'The' war ...

I guess at the 70th anniversary of D-Day, we're probably moving into a period where you can no longer talk about 'the' war and be sure everyone knows which one you're talking about.

Maybe my historical antennae are too sensitive, but even if I was born well after the war (my parents were born after the war), I feel that it was still imprinted on the 'national psyche' of my generation. We'd never lived through a war, but were intensely aware how fortunate we were.

I'm not sure it's possible to transmit that awareness to the next generation: I'm not sure that my parents' or grandparents' generation intentionally transmitted it to ours. It was just there.

One might fear that with the passing of memories, people might forget the horrors and be less wary of warmongering: unfortunately history seems to demonstrate that even recent memories don't necessarily prevent war (14'-'18 to '39-'45 was only one generation).

This slide show is very moving, partly because it's a visible expression of the passing of time, of fading memories, of the fact that some things from the past will irretrievably be lost or forgotten forever.

Transience, frailty, mortality, finitude.

And all that.

A french film about homeschooling, who'd a believed it?!

Unfortunately, I suspect it's not likely to get as far as Swissland, so I've ordered the DVD.

Bike & Horse ...

A few weekends back we had a busy Saturday: in the morning a gymkhana for bikes. Kalia learnt to ride over these bumps, and a few other tricks.

In the afternoon, we went for 'horse practice', in preparation for a horse ride in a couple of weeks time. This is with the local 'team diabetes': all 5 kids in this photo have diabetes.

First they had to learn to take care of the horse

Et ensuite, place au promenade!
Then they went for a ride!

Birthday

Pour mon anniversaire j'ai reçu:
  • Deux bouteilles de whisky
  • Une bouteille de grappa
  • Deux livres en lien avec la foi
  • Des partitions pour l'orgue
  • Le kit Lego de R2-D2.

Etonnement révélateur...
For my birthday I got:
  • Two bottles of whisky
  • One bottle of grappa
  • Two faith-related books
  • Organ sheet music
  • The R2-D2 Lego kit.

Which I actually found quite revealing...
