Mammon

Voilà, on s'est acheté une camescope, avec 20% de réduction (grâce à des amis qui nous ont filé leurs jetons de la Migros). Ca fait que cette semaine j'aurai dépensé un peu plus de 1000 CHF sur de la 'technologie'.



Ce qui me pose quand même un petit problème de conscience. Comment justifier une telle dépense sur du non-essentiel ? J'ai beau me dire que j'ai fait des bonnes affaires, j'ai quand-même l'impression de succomber au matérialisme.



Suivant l'éducation que vous avez reçu, vous me comprendrez très bien, ou me trouverez peut-être complètement débile. En général je suis reconnaissant d'avoir une 'conscience sociale', mais parfois j'ai l'impression que c'est peut-être un peu sur-dévéloppé.



Et le pire c'est que les jouets, ça rend même pas heureux !

Here's a photo of the video camera we bought today (taken with the digital camera bought on Tuesday...). It's a Canon MV750i. And with 20% off, we paid 800 CHF, which is another bargain.



So I should be happy. But spending that much money gives me a hard time with my social conscience. Is this blatant consumerism? How do I justify spending so much money on a (albeit highly sophisticated) piece of plastic?



On the other hand, do I need to justify it? Is being thrifty of any moral value in and of itself? What is my responsibility as concerns all the starving people in the world?



How much is enough? And how much is too much?
