Nous avons passé des vacances dans les Diablerets (ouais, nom bizarre) dans cet auberge style chalet. C'était un peu étrange à cause du COVID - beaucoup de restaurants à moitié fermés, ou en difficulté. Ce n'est pas loin de chez nous, mais le paysage est très différent.

So we had a holiday in the Diablerets (yeah, weird name) in this chalet-style hotel. It was a bit strange because of COVID - lots of restaurants half shutdown, or struggling. It's not far from where we live but very different scenery.

Nous sommes allés faire de la luge - cette fois-ci, j'ai loué des luges (la fois précédente, j'avais apporté l'une des nôtres et j'en avais loué une pour Rebecca - elle a dévalé la pente en un rien de temps, et j'ai fini par faire la majeure partie du chemin à pied parce que notre luge était restée coincée dans la neige molle).

We went sledging - this time I hired sledges (on a previous occasion I had brought one of ours, and hired one for Rebecca - she bombed down in no time at all, and I ended up walking most of the way because our sledge just got stuck in the soft snow).

 Nous avons déboursé l'argent nécessaire pour aller dans les grandes télécabines jusqu'au "Glacier 3000" (en fait, j'y ai eu droit à un tour d'hélicoptère pour mes 40 ans, je ne sais pas si je l'ai déjà partagé ici). C'est un endroit frustrant pour prendre des photos, parce que les vues sont si énormes et impressionnantes, puis quand vous regardez votre photo et elle ne vous donne pas cette sensation à couper le souffle...

We spent the money to go in the big telecabins up to "Glacier 3000" (I actually got a helicopter ride there for my 40th, don't know if I ever shared that here). It is a frustrating place to take photographs, because the vistas are so enormous and impressive, then you look at your photo and it just doesn't give you the breathtaking aspect.

Nous avons découvert que Rebecca est sensible à l'altitude. C'est probablement lié au diabète, mais ça l'a complètement vidée de toute énergie.

We discovered that Rebecca is sensitive to altitude. It is probably related to diabetes, but it completely drained her of any energy.

Back ? ... De retour ?

 Je ne sais pas si j'y crois beaucoup, mais voilà, après 18 mois de silence, cet après-midi j'ai un peu de temps et l'envie de rattrapper un peu le temps perdu.

Je dis 18 mois parce que c'est décembre 2021, mais je vais poster les photos de nos activités avec la date des jours où elles ont eu lieu.

C'est surtout WhatsApp et le smartphone qui ont tué ce blog - WhatsApp parce que du coup ma famille a un autre moyen de se tenir au courant de nos activités, et le smartphone parce que ça permet de répondre à pas mal de courriels et du coup je suis beaucoup moins sur le PC.

Mais... cet été les filles ont eu beaucoup de plaisir à parcourir des anciens articles ici, alors je me suis dit qu'il faut essayer de prolonger encore un peu.

Aussi je vais tricher sans complexe et utiliser pas mal Deepl pour traduire les articles (mais je ne vous dirai pas dans quel sens !)

 I don't know if I believe in this very much, but here I am, after 18 months of silence : this afternoon I have some time and the motivation to catch up a little.

I say 18 months because it's December 2021, but I'm going to post the photos of our activities with the date of the days they took place.

It's mostly WhatsApp and the smartphone that have killed this blog - WhatsApp because it gives my family another way to keep up to date with our activities, and the smartphone because it allows me to answer a lot of emails and so I spend much less time on the PC.

But... this summer the girls had a lot of fun browsing through old posts here, so I thought I'd try to keep it going for a bit longer

Also, I'm going to cheat unabashedly and use Deepl a lot to translate the articles (but I won't tell you which way!).

Lockdown

Il y a un peu plus d'un an, j'ai envoyé un message à mon chef pour rappeler encore une fois que mes demandes de télétravail n'étaient toujours pas abouties, et que ça faisait une dizaine d'années que je les faisais.

 

Le même après-midi, il vient m'informer que ça va être possible - et tout de suite. Mais rien à voir avec mes demandes. COVID.

A bit less than a year ago, I sent a message to my boss, pointing out that I had been asking to be able to remote work for something like 10 years, and nothing had ever come of it.

 

The same afternoon, he came to see me to tell me that it was finally possible - but nothing to do with my email. COVID.

Les enfants ont aussi eu droit à du travail à distance (cours d'anglais).

The kids got in on the distance learning too.

Comme partout, pour le premier confinement les magasins étaient pris d'assaut. Les employés à la Migros étaient morts de rire - elles n'arrivaient même pas à mettre la marchandise sur les étages que les gens les prenaient. Le papier toilette a manqué un moment. Bizarrement c'est la levure qui a mis le plus longtemps à revenir.

The shelves on the first days after the general lockdown was declared were crazy. The shop assistants were just walking around laughing, they didn't even have time to stock the shelves before people were buying everything. Toilet paper was one of the first casualties, but interestingly, it was yeast that took the longest to 'recover'.

Rebecca et ses amis avaient découvert un coin pas loin de la ville où ils avaient commencé à construire une cabane. J'ai pu intégré l'équipe et participer pour la finaliser, et nous avons passé beaucoup d'après-midi agréables là-bas à construire, explorer, roupiller, griller des choses.

Rebecca and some friends had discovered a secluded spot just outside of town where they had started building a den. I got in on the action and we spent many a pleasant afternoon there: building, exploring, digging, sleeping, cooking.

Ca faisait des années que je n'avais pas fait des pommes de terre dans un feu dans la nature.

It was years since I'd eaten a baked potato from a fire. So delicious.

La nourriture est tellement plus délicieuse quand tu l'as cramé toi-même dehors !

Food is so much more delicious when you've burnt it on your own fire!

Lisbonne 2

Au fil des années, on en a fait pas mal, d'aquariums (Le Grau du Roi, Montpelier, Hong Kong, etc.), alors on n'est pas facile à impressionner. Mais l'acquarium à Lisbonne c'est vraiment 'un' acquarium (ou presque) - un énorme au milieu, avec des petits bassin qu'on découvre en faisant le tour.

Over the years, we've been to a fair few acquariums, so ... we have opinions and aren't easy to impress. But the Lisbon acquarium was something else - one enormous acquarium with 'everything' in it. You walk around it, and on the way get to see smaller 'satellite' acquariums.

Il y a de l'espace pour s'arrêter et contempler. J'ose pas imaginer l'épaisseur du verre !

There is plenty of space to stop and look. The glass must be half a metre thick!

Une ancienne tour dont j'ai oublié l'histoire et la signification (ouf ! si c'était une visite scolaire je serais grillé !).

Here is an old tower by the edge of the river. I have a vague recollection that it was the place that explorers were waved off from, or something like that.

J'étais content de cette prise de vue, entre ciel, néons, et Jésus (plus graffitis).

I was quite pleased with the layered nature of this photo, and the mix of subjects - the declivity (is that a word?), neon light, graffiti, sky, and the statue in the background.

On a payé pour visiter le toit d'un centre commercial. On avait un peu peur que ce soit décevant, mais pour finir on y a passé un très long moment (en plus il commençait à faire vraiment bon dehors, et Rebecca se sentait mieux). Après on est allé se faire plaisir manger dans les 'food hall', où chacun a pu se choisir un plat à un stand différent.

We visited a viewing point on the top of a big department store. We were a bit worried it was going to be naff and not worth the money, but we ended up spending quite a while up there. Rebecca was feeling better, and the weather was very pleasant. Afterwards we went down to the 'food hall', and each chose something different to eat and share.

Heureuse d'être en vacances (qui plus est, sur un bateau pour cette photo).

Happy to be on holiday (and we were on a boat trip too).

Voilà le bateau sur lequel on a fait un long tour. C'était très agréable. Apéro compris dans le prix.

We went for a long trip down the estuary in this boat. Very pleasant, and wine was served.

Ces gâteaux sont la spécialité de Lisbonne (encore plus que le morue !). Ils sont très bons. C'était fascinant de voir ce monsieur et la vitesse à laquelle il travaillait.

These are the traditional Lisbon egg tarts (but they are nicer than that sounds). Delicious. It was fascinating to watch the speed at which this guy was making them.
