Groves/Darby

Depending on your ecclesial background, you may or may not have hear of J.N. Darby. In Christian circles in Switzerland he is better know because of the 'Darbyist' churches which still exist here. It was interesting for me to learn this, because what I had read about him (mostly here) put him decidedly on the wrong side of history: not the kind of person you'd expect people to want to follow. I believe that 'his' people here in Switzerland had to 'agree' with him in the unresolved disputes in the UK, before being 'accepted'.

What is particularly fascinating to me is this:
  • that the darbyist 'denomination' seems to have retained that 'DNA': multiplying by division: mutual shunnings of brothers and sisters with the 'wrong' theology. This dynamic is very close to the heavy accent on 'right believing' that I grew up with (I originally wrote 'right theology', but I think that's being too kind).
  • that he was warned of how this would all turn out by an incredibly insightful man A.N. Groves, in a letter which is going to be the subject of the next few blog posts.
If you're in a hurry, the original (found here, but I've preserved a copy) is here. In order to translate it into French, I first translated it into 'modern' English. If you have the time to read it all now, you can, but I'm going to serialise it here over the next few weeks in more digestible sized nuggets.

Here's the 'money quote' (as they say):
"You will be known more by what you are against than what you are for"

Please meditate on that in the context of your own belief and church...

The platinum rule ...

Je me demande pourquoi, quelle différence ça pourrait faire. A méditer.
You know all know the Golden Rule (I sure hope you do!).

Recently I started wondering about a Platinum Rule. I looked on the internet, and unfortunately the name is already taken, but given that it's taken for what looks like a redundant restatement of the Golden Rule, I'm going to reappropriate it for my own uses.

So, the Golden Rule is (at its most succinct): Do as you would be done by.

The Platinum Rule would be: Do to society as you would have everyone else do to society.

Which is interesting to think about (I find).
  • It's a very green/ecological-sounding kind of philosophy.
  • Someone once complimented me for my 'social conscience' :) At that time I was at an age where it was not (apparently) that common
  • From a utilitarian point of view, it's completely useless - if I, and just I, stop (for example) driving a car, it's totally not going to save the planet. (A bit like the 'eat your greens otherwise all the children in Africa will starve' thing). Funnily enough, I vividly remember (at an even younger age than above) arguing for this point of view with a friend, though I can't for the life of me remember what the topic was. Note that the Golden Rule doesn't work so well from a utilitarian point of view (I've honestly heard someone say, "I tried it and it doesn't work". They had apparently understood it backwards: if you are nice to everyone else, they will be nice to you. Nope, doesn't work)
  • Jesus didn't preach it. He 'stopped' at the Golden Rule. Interesting to think about why, about what the difference might be. I don't have much to add to this, as I haven't really thought about it that much.

Camera thief ... Voleuse

Bizarre :)
I keep finding photos on my camera which I don't remember taking.

Very strange... :)

Airfix

When we were over in the UK in October, we visited a toy shop with my parents to look for presents for the girls.

And came out with a Christmas present for me too!  A little Airfix kit for a Red Arrow.

I had great fun putting it together. The previous kit I remember building was a motorbike, about 28 years ago, I think (at Mike & Janet's).

Do you remember? ...

'Bouncing babies' would probably not be considered very politically correct these days.

A Cross-less Faith ...

A temps.

This is powerful stuff:
The fundamental nature of God’s involvement in the world this side of heaven is the way of the cross.

People don’t like that. I don’t like that.

I want a God I can see, not a God who is hidden.

I want a God who will convince me beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is living and active and on my side.

I want spectacular answers to prayer.

I want to witness remarkable events that can only be explained by God’s intervention.

I want tangible evidence that faith pays off, not only in the end but here and now.

I want a God who solves my problems, eases my pain, answers my questions, and makes me successful.

I want God to enable me to do good works so I can feel good about myself and my contribution to the world.

I want to be made strong, confident, optimistic, fit for the long haul.

I want insight into how life works so that I can follow the right steps and help others do the same.

I want a God who makes a way in the wilderness, not one who leads and leaves me there.

I want fulfillment in my work, health and happiness in my family, grace and cooperation among my neighbors, peace, security, and ample provision in my world.

I want to hear God speak. I detest silence.

I want God to show up when I need God. On time. Bringing what I need.

I don’t want a God who bleeds, who thirsts, who worries about his mother, who lets clueless, cruel people drive nails through his hands and feet, whose lifeless body is carried away by weeping women and timid men.

I don’t want a God who forgives people who do things like this. I want them to pay dearly.

I’m with the crowd here: “Let him come down from the cross now, and we will believe in him.”

Show us, God. Prove yourself. Let us see, let us hear, let us experience your power and glory.

And the one on the cross says not a word.

Sorry, but I just don't ...

Pourquoi?!

Et ben... parceque.
Imagine eliminating mosquitoes. That would be a good thing, wouldn't it?

Now imagine a few generations down the road, someone re-introducing mosquitoes.

Why?!

Well... because.

6 years old ... 6 ans

Sorry, running a bit late here on the blog updates! For Rebecca's sixth, we did the much-used but always successful train trip to 'Espace Junior'. This time with 4 'big' children (Kalia & friends) to look after the 'little' ones. There was lots of bouncing...

Rouler...
Driving...

Et manger le gâteau licorne!
A unicorn cake!.

Enfants heureux, papa heureux.
And general having a nice time with friends. Each 'big' one had two 'little' ones to look after. It mostly went very well. Happy kids, happy Daddy.

Still painting ... On peint encore

THIS is the advantage of home schooling. Kalia is on a roll with her painting. Here are two more totally self-motivated and self-directed creations from the past weeks. I managed to convince 'the teacher' that she should be left to her own devices, and well... the girl done good.

Top: NOT painting by numbers. I confess (again) to having been totally incredulous that she'd pencilled the outline on her own - copying from the tiny stickers you can see.

Bottom: at church they're doing a scheme where they pair up an adult with a child to encourage intergenerational relationships (and prayer). Kalia volunteered to 'do' the poster. Given the amount of effort and attention she put into it, I thought it was a bit unfair that it only got about half an hour of exposure on one Sunday morning, but she doesn't seem to have noticed, so all's well.

Boxing ... La boxe

New anger management strategy (home only, we haven't enrolled her in boxing lessons !).
