Saillon

     

Le week-end dernier on a passé un bon moment aux bains de Saillon (deux jours de suite avec nuit à l'hôtel entre deux!). C'est agréable d'avoir les filles assez grandes pour pouvoir manger au restaurant, même si le premier soir, elles se sont presque endormis à table, épuisées par une journée dans l'eau!

J'ai aussi eu droit à un massage relaxant, pour la première fois de ma vie!

Last weekend we went to the hot baths at Saillon (staying overnight in a hotel nearby). It's great that the girls are big enough now to be able to go to a restaurant without too much fuss. Having said that, the first evening, they pretty much fell asleep at the table, worn out after a day in the water!

I also had a full-body 'relaxing massage', for the first time in my life!

Près de chez nous, des grands travaux debutent en ce moment. Ils vont faire un énorme parking souterrain, et doivent déplacer l'entrée à un parking existant - en le faisant passer sous l'école. Ils vont creuser par étape, pour garder l'accès à toutes les commerces pendant ce temps. Je me réjouis d'observer tout ça!

Near where we live, there's big building work starting right now. They're going to build a massive underground carpark, which includes relocating the entrance to an existing underground carpark - and digging under a school. They are also going to do 'phased' digging so that all the shops and buildings continue to be accessible. I'm quite looking forward to it!

Je ne crois pas avoir mentionné les 'Domespace' sur ce blog. C'est des maisons rondes en bois, qui m'intéressent beaucoup. Ca me ferait bien envie, mais ici c'est déjà difficile de trouver un terrain: encore plus de faire accepter quelque chose de 'bizarre' par la commune et les voisins.

L'autre jour, j'ai fait un détour pour regarder un ici en Suisse (il y en a plusieurs). Il faut croire que c'était le quartier des architectures eccentriques, car en face de la maison souscoupe, il y avait la maison cube!

Surprisingly, I apparently haven't ever mentioned Domespace here. It's a special house design, wooden built and round - it can even turn with the sun, if required. I'd love to build/own one, but it's difficult enough as it is finding land round here, let alone getting the council - and neighbours - to accept anything 'weird'.

The other day I took a detour to check out one here in Swissland (there are several in the area). It must have been set in the designated 'eccentric architecture' zone, because opposite the flying saucer house, there was the 'cube' house!

 Hier, vers cette heure-ci, j'ai reçu un mail d'un gars, disant qu'il était en Suisse et peut-être qu'on pourrait se retrouver.

Il paraît qu'il avait été en communication avec mon frère (au Kenya) au sujet d'un sac (perdu en Tanzanie), qui lui disait: "tu sais que mon frère est dans le coin là bas?"

Il était vraiment à quelques minutes de mon boulot, alors on a mangé ensemble à midi.

C'était le responsable de mon groupe de jeunes d'il y a longtemps en arrière (vraiment longtemps, la dernière fois qu'on s'est vu, il était plus jeune que je suis maintenant!).

C'était super de discuter ensemble. J'apprécie tellement ces perles qui nous tombe du ciel - des petits moment de vie en concentrée, où on peut traverser des décennies en quelques phrases.

Maintenant il faut que j'aille retrouver des anciennes photos de l'époque!

 This time yesterday, I got a mail from this guy, saying he was in Switzerland, maybe we could meet up.

Turns out, he had been in communication with my brother (in Kenya) about a bag (lost in Tanzania) who said, "you know my brother's down the road from where you are?"

So we met up for lunch today.

He was my youth group leader, way back when (and I mean waaaaay back - like last time we met, he was younger than I am now!).

It was great to chat. I do love these pearls that drop into you lap from nowhere - little moments of concentrated life where time slows down and you can span decades in a few words.

Gonna have to dig out some old photos now!

D'une part 2 travestis suédois, de l'autre un yodeuleur suisse qui fait le pitre. J'aime bien tout ça!

I don't know what it is about two cross-dressing Suedes, and a Swiss yodeller doing something akin to turkey impressions, but... I like this stuff.

Helico

Pour mon anniversaire, Madame nous a offert un vol en hélico. Kalia n'était pas rassurée au départ, mais elle a été courageuse, et pour finir, ça lui a beaucoup plu.

For my birthday, my biggest present by far was a helicopter ride from Madame. Kalia was very nervous, but she was also very brave and ended up having a great time.

Notre destination était le glacier des Diablerets, où nous avons fait un petit promenade, en évitant les crevasses!

We did a round trip with a stop on a glacier, where we went for a little walk, taking care to stay on the path to avoid falling down any crevasses!

Sur le chemin, et au retour, le pilote s'est exercé à l'atterissage en montagne, sur des petits monticules comme celui-ci.

On the way there and back, the pilot practised his 'mountain landings' on little hills like this one.

On a vu le Mont Blanc, 'notre' lac, et plein d'autres montagnes...

We saw the Mont Blanc, 'our' lake, and tons of other mountains...

... et d'autres lacs, le château de Gruyères, des chalets d'alpage et des pics rocheux.

Maintenant il faut économiser pour remettre ça!

La semaine passée, je réfléchissais sur les possibilités de bricoler un 'Générateur éléctrostatique de Kelvin' ('Orage de Kelvin', en anglais, ça sonne mieux) pour les filles (ben oui, pour les filles, évidemment !)/

Du coup, je me suis demandé comment je pouvais m'y prendre pour expliquer comment ça fonctionne: quelle est la signification de cette expérience?

Je me rappelle très clairement d'une de mes premiers cours de chimie, où le prof a fait bruler de l'éther sur son bureau, momantanément, la salle de classe était coupée en deux par un mur de feu.

C'était très impressionnant (puisque je m'en rappelle encore), mais je me demande combien ce que cette expérience était censé illustrer?

(Pour les amateurs de théologie, il y a une analogie ici, je crois que ça crève les yeux, mais le titre pourrait vous servir d'indice). 

The other day, I was pondering the logistics of hacking together a Kelvin thunderstorm* for the girls (obviously not for my own amusement, whatever next?!).

This got me to wondering about how I would go about explaining the physics of how it works, of what this experiment 'means'.

I distinctly remember in one of my first chemistry lessons (at Ashmead, I believe), the teacher lighting up the whole of the front bench with burning ether. A brief wall of flame across the classroom.

It was very impressive (obviously, as I still remember it), but did anyone remember what it was supposed to illustrate?

There's a theological parallel in there, which I figure is obvious, but if not the title should help you...
